Really random topic: Myths.

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, this is going to sound really random, but it is a topic that has interested me for quite a while now.

I'm going to cut to the chase: Is there a lock ness monster? Is big foot real? Do aliens exist?

I'm a bit of a freak when it comes to this stuff. I can't help it, I'm intrigued .

Spill your thoughts, what do you think?

Funny that..I was talking to someone about it over the weekend.I believe that all myths have a basis in truth.I dont think dragons have been gone as long as one might think..George and the dragon must date from about 8th century(?) Probably not as large as the film versions though..but who knows?? And another to ponder..were unicorns, centaurs etc experimental animals that didnt 'work'..genetic experiments??? Oooerrr..here we go..someone lock me up now before I get started!!

All very good points.

RE: The 'Bigfoot' video my first instinct is it's a bloke in a very convincing costume. However I have done yet more research. This footage belongs to a man called Roger Patterson, filmed in 1967 (hence bad quality of camera.) This footage has been speculated many times and Roger was accused of staging this film with his friend Robert Gimlin.

The video was sent the the best costume designer in the world (in Hollywood) and they were asked to make a costume as close to the one in the video as possible. They were unsuccessful. They couldn't get the thigh, arm and chest muscles like the one in the video (I've seen pictures of the costume, it looks nothing like the one in the video).

So if it's fake, where did Roger and Robert get such a good costume from? Baring in mind it was 1967?

Further evidence was found when a singular strand of hair was found in a hollow tree stump when looking for 'bigfoot'. This hair's DNA is unlike any other living being on this planet that we know of. Strange.

I think these things do exist, but have maybe got blown out of proportion. What may have been a freak of nature has been turned into a monster. A mountain man that was large & hairy is now a yeti. A freshwater snake / dragon is now a loch ness monster. A vistor from another planet is an alien ( why aren't they just humans who look different)?

A ghost is supposedly scary - why?

Miniature people with wings - fairies.

Do you see what I mean?

I think that all these things exist, but because it's the first time someone has seen such a thing & it's diverse from the norm - then they give them a name & call them myths, wierd & scary!

Do aliens exist?

I think that, given the size of the universe, aliens "must" exist out there somewhere.

However, I also think that, given the size of the universe, it is highly unlikely that the so-called UFO sightings are actually alien space craft buzzing us for fun.

I have been watching the "Catastrophe" series (on C4 I think). It documents the amazing sequence of events that has lead to us being here, starting from the moon being created by an earth sized planet hitting earth at exactly the right angle to start it spinning, give it a tilt and to create the moon, and going on through various planet-wide catastrophic events, such as 500 million-year ice ages and vast volanic eruptions. The string of events are such that it is hard to imagine that anything similar occurs more than extremely infrequently in the Universe, so the chance of intelligent life arising on a planet near enough to us for aliens to reach us, at a time in the history of the universe that we will be here when they get here is vanishingly small. I follow Douglas Adams' line of thinking. To paraphrase (i.e., can't be bothered to find the actual quote):

Size of the universe: infinite

Number of intelligent lifeforms: a finite if v small number

infinity divided by a finite number is always zero, hence any alien lifeforms you might meet in your travels through the galaxy must simply be products of a deranged imagination and can safely be ignored.

I knew someone who would argue for hours that the moon landing in the 60's was recorded in a film studio......

I wouldn't argue for hours, but must admit part of me does wonder about this

I recently saw an interview with a lady scientist who runs the SETI programme in the US.

SETI is a huge area in the desert which is full of transmitters and receivers beaming out 'messages' into the ether and hoping that someone, somewhere in the universe will reply.

The interviewer asked her what her gut feeling was that there were other forms of life out there. She replied that she was a scientist and couldn't have gut feelings about things  but I was pretty sure that she really hoped there were :)
