revesby37
My new chooks seem to have stopped eating the layers pellets that came with the Eglu 2 weeks ago. I bought some mixed corn yesterday, which they seem to love, but I read somewhere that this is not a good balanced food. Does anyone have any tips on how I can get them to eat the pellets? Since the first egg on Christmas day, none of our three hens have laid - is this normal at this time of the year?
chelsea
my lot arent eating much really either, im not getting eggs, (during the winter egg production is low or non eggsistent ) Once your girls are into full lay they will be eating for England! Corn is tasty, but makes chickens fat. Try to give them corn in the afternoon as a treat and dont give them too much.

Egluntyne
The best way is to harden your heart and completely cut out the corn I'm afraid. The corn is fattening and not very nutritious. Mine weren't mad keen on the Omlet Pellets and were a lot more enthusiastic when I changed brands.
Lesley
Yes, stick with some form of pellets but try changing brand as Egluntine says. Don't give them corn again until they are eating enough pellets and then only give it as a treat late in the afternoon. I'll just move this to the Chickens section
Redwing
Mine don't like the brand I am using at the moment but my resolve is better than theirs and they have given in now! When the bag is nearing empty I will mix it with warm water to make porridge which they love (regardless of brand) and use the last up that way. revesby37
Thanks for the responses. As I have an almost full bag of pellets, I'll persevere and try making a mash with them. Sack of corn will last for ages now, just giving it as a treat!
Ygerna
My girls only get a few kernals of corn to get them into the run after free ranging. They dont get to come out of the run till I have seen them at the grub either. They will eat a healthy mix or they dont get their sweets I have children, chooks are easy in comparison
