Introducing the new girls

Recommended Posts

First of all, thanks to everyone for their sympathy messages on our sad loss of Evadne - the ginger girl is greatly missed.

Her loss left Hilda, our Miss Pepperpot, on her own, so two days later we went to Martins Wood Farm and chose Joan (a White Star) and Amy (a Skyline). This was last Monday, 29/12/2008. Joan being at point of lay, immediately got on with Hilda (20 months old) and they're now best of friends.

Unfortunately, with Amy being that much younger than Joan, she was bullied by Joan and Hilda, despite following all the advice regarding introductions, we ended up with Amy in her own eglu on Friday morning. Having discussed the situation, we decided that Amy needed a friend of her own age, so we went back to Martins Wood and brought Lucy home! She's another Skyline from the same litter - same age.

Thankfully, they're already the best of friends and are quite happy looking at the 'older' girls through the bars. We had a very strictly supervised wander round the garden this afternoon with all four out, and apart from one peck, all is at peace.

It's early days, and we definitely have two separate pairs of hens at the moment, but as Amy and Lucy mature and come into lay, we're sure that they'll all get along. We'll update you as time goes by. The guys at Martins Wood Farm near Lewes were extremely helpful and accommodating, highly recommend them if you're in Sussex.

It isn't every day that you hear of a hen called Joan! :D

Maybe she should be living in an Ark rather than an Eglu - Joan of Eglu doesn't have quite the same ring does it

The will integrate into one group of 4 but it usually takes 3-4 weeks for them to gel, that's what happened with my two sets of intros.
