How many hens ina standard 2m eglu cube run plse?

Recommended Posts

When we first got our cube with 3m run we had 3 in - we now have 5; which is probably about right, however we are considering whether to add another metre in the spring.

Some of the consideration will be how much freeranging they get - ours only get supervised freeranging, so about 3 or 4 times a week.

:D

The way I read the info that came with my cube, I think Omlet recommend up to 6, then up to 8 with one extension and up to 10 with a second. That's how I read it anyway & I guess that's probably a maximum depending on how much free ranging time you can offer.

Having done the calulations and double checked with Omlet I can confirm the floor area of a cube and an eglu with a standard run is almost identical, likewise with an extension both are still the same area. The difference is the hieght and of course the potential to add higher up perches, etc in the run.

The reason for this is the 20cm skirt counted in the exterior dimensions - the 2m cube run has a 20cm skirt all around, therefore internally it is only 1.6m long. The eglu is 3m total length, of which 2.2m is the run and you only lose the skirt off one end for the internal dimension - this means the internal length of a standard eglu run is 2m (compared to only 1.6 of a cube), but the cube is wider, hence the overall floor space is the same.

Omlet sell the Standard cube as for up to 6 hens, or with extension up to 10 hens - whilst the housing is OK for this, without much free-ranging I would say 4 and 7-8 would seem more appropriate as a max.
