The peak district - recommendations wanted

Recommended Posts

I'm hoping to take hubbie away to the peak district for a weekend in March as a surprise for his 50th. We like hill walking and have never been to The Peak District, trouble is normally hubbie would search out the good walks and then we'd find somewhere to stay based on the walks we want to do, but being as I'm trying to arrange it as a surprise I can't ask for his input. :anxious:

So you clever omleteers, does anyone have any favourite walks they could recommend, We would normally pick out walks varying in length from 5 or 6 miles to longer ones between 8 - 10 miles. Hill walking is good but nothing that requires ropes or excessive scrambling.

I will also be looking for nice hotels/guest houses/B&B (not too posh that I would worry about being seen in walking gear) so recommendations for those would be helpful too.

Thanks in advance.

Don't know about walks - it's many years since I walked in the peak district and was a child at the time (our family favourite was Kinder Scout but that is all I remember! ) but I strongly recommend this hotel:

Roaring log fires; oak beamed master suite (our favourite); gorgeous food; geese roaming the gardens - a real oasis! 8)

My OH recommended a walk to take in Carl Wark an Iron Age hillfort (mind you he's an archaeologist, so most walks take in a ruin or two!)

here's a link to it:

It's near-ish Sheffield. Egluntine may be on soon, as she's local, and be able to recommend some others more appropriate.

We go to the Peak District every October but stay in youth hostels in the area (Eyam, Hartington Hall, Ilam Hall, Alstonefield) we mainly stay around the Dove valley, but that may be a bit gentle for your interests!

Good luck with your planning - I think it's a lovely idea!

I envy you - I love The Peak District. We lived in a small village called Litton, close to Tideswell. I don't know if it is still as good but The Red Lion there used to serve excellent meals. It is very small and intimate however!! When we were there you had to book up some time in advance.

Lots of nice walks round there as well. We just used the OS maps and worked out different routes.

I know a few decent walks.

I'm sure I've got a couple of books. Let me dig them out and I'll get back to you.

Carl Wark is near me....it is an Iron age fortress with umpteen lovely walks around it.

Padley Gorge is beautiful.

Both near Hathersage/Grindleford.

**Fox House** on the edge of the Peak District/Longshaw Estate has accommodation and is popular with walkers.

I love the Peak District, used to live near there and go often, now I try and go back once a year for a walking weekend.

I strongly recommend The Scotsman's Pack in Hathersage, it's a pub that does great food, and when you've eaten you can stagger upstairs to bed! It's not 4* accommodation, but comfortable and very friendly, and I've stayed there several times.

You can do a walk right from there, around Stanage or Grindleford, so you don't need to take the car, but equally there are lots of places around there that are only a short drive - Grindlow, Foolow, Eyam. There's a lovely walk in Litton which I think is called the Five Dales walk. Sounds like a few of the people above have got suggestions for walks, anyway.

I do hope you have a lovely time, I am  !

Hello

We had a long weekend break a few months ago at

http://www.losehillhouse.co.uk

They often have special offer breaks, and if a couple stay full board there is a good discount on the cost of the evening meal included in the deal.

I had been there on my own a couple of times before (when I'd been away on training courses), and each time I had a different room. Each one individual and with fantastic bathrooms.

From the hotel you only have to cross the road and you are onto the start of the Losehill walk. Once up on the ridge you can walk along to the pass and then back to base via Castleton.

We took a shortcut one day, turning right by the post box to cut our the corner back to the hotel and walked through a field full of free ranging chickens :D

Enjoy your break, it's a wonderful part of the country.

Regards,

Christine

The Peak District is gorgeous - not very far from us really. Hartington & Biggin are lovely - Hartington has a fab cheese shop & nice little tea room, which doubles up as a postoffice. I also adore Bakewell. There is a shop there selling the most wonderful pies & Bakewell puddings (puddings not tarts). The Tissington trail is a good one for walkers!

Have a nice time.

Hi, obviously living here i've got my own thoughts on good places to walk.

Start with the basics, south of the county flatter more rolly, up north, where we live more hilly. So depending on the type of walking you enjoy, its north or south. Its all nice :D

Being local we walk all our walks without walking boots (all the trippers have full kit, always makes us smile) exept Kinder, your in quite serious territory up there.

Acommodation there is everything from fischers hall posh (were the famous stay)to yha's camping etc all depends on how deep your pockets are.( I can personally recomend Riverside Hotel, Ahford in the water, but that was a few years ago)

Nice places to visit are Chatsworth, Bakewell, Castleton (looks pretty but i'm not a fan of gift shops and show caves)

Some really nice walking/cycle hire at ladybower.

To be honest I don't think theres a bad walk where ever you go. Book it and enjoy :D

Just wanted to thank everyone for their recommendations for our break in the Peaks for OH's 50th. We had a fabulous time and did some lovely walks. :)

The weather was a little unkind at times but we did have some really lovely bright weather at times too. We had to abandon our walk to Carl's Wark as it was so windy I was actually blown of my feet as we neared the top!.

I know other peoples holiday snaps can be a bit boring  but I thought some of you may like to have a little browse. :)

I can't see the pics as I am not a member of Facebook. :(

Good to hear that you enjoyed your break.

I had a look via my son's account.

The Longshaw Estate, Padley Gorge, Surprise View and Carl Wark are all just minutes away from my house!

Lovely photos. :D

If I had known that I could have popped your books back to you in person! They are all wrapped up ready to post, unfortunately I forgot to take the package out with me today  so will pop them in the post on Monday now.

You are really lucky having such beautiful places on your doorstep!

Thanks again for the loan of the books they were really useful. :)
