Aaah Panic... 4 suprise chickens! + Photos of intro's

Recommended Posts

This thread has been brilliant!:lol::lol:

Fortunately for me, I'd misssed it previously and was able to see the whole tale in one sitting. :D

Your girls are lovely Mostin. I am so pleased your birthday present was such a surprise.

I have a Suffolk Noir too and she lays the most gorgeous shiny chestnut brown eggs. I bet you can't wait for all the new girls to be laying?

My new girls now all have names. My God-daughter chose one of the Corton Blues as her chicken and that girl is now called Leala.

The other Corton Blue and the Columbine are called Elliot and Carla after the two girls in the TV series "Scrubs".

My OH named the Suffolk Noir Robin.

He was suprised at my choices as all my animal names usually end up ending in "ie"or "y" but once they are shortend I am sure they will become:

Ellie, Carlie, Lealie and Robbie :lol:

Then they will fit in with Dolly, Lilly and Shirley

and Tilley and Woscy the cats :lol:

I know what you mean, I have started from the other way. Once I get these 7 into 1 flock and into a cube I am planning on filling my empty eglu with ex-batts for the 1st time. Looking forward to that alot.

Today was the day we started phase 1 of the intros. We spent a couple of hours moving eglus and runs and fencing around the garden to make a new area. It now means we can have each set of girls out on their own but staring in at the others  . Or the oldies can be free ranging round the whole garden while the newbies are within the fenced area.

We've been letting the oldies free range all week and feeding them their treats by the door of the newbies pen. Today we turned the tables and fed the newbied treats while they were on the outside and the oldies were in their pen.

As we have been doing this all week the shouting and squabbling has reduced to virtually nothing so today we decided to let them all out together as they all behaved at the fence line. At first it all went swimingly and here is a lovely photo of all 7 eating corn together.

Peace did not reign for long though and after 5 minutes Dolly and Lillian were placed in the sin bin  , all they could do from there was shout  .

5 minutes later Shirley followed them into the Sin bin. Not happy girls  .

The newbies seemed unaffected by the vebal abuse they were getting from the other run and carried on enjoying their porridge and free ranging  . We'll carry on the fence line treats this week and then see what happens again next weekend.

Looks like you have been working very hard.... Do you fancy coming around here and sorting mine out.......... I have 2 eglus but the lilac one is still in the kennel and the green on is still in bits in the greenhouse....... With the arrival of the pups we are now on a countdown as the pups will need the puppy pen in about 4 weeks..... love Sue xxx

Just a thought. Do you think if they mixed without treats it would be more peaceful?

Maybe? They will certainly get lots of chance to do some hard staring at each other across the divide this week and we'll try again with and without treats another time.

I am shattered, I'm logging on at this time as we had to go out for the evening , but I fell asleep on the way there in the car, and on the way home :oops::lol:

They all look lovely :D and hopefully next times meeting up will be better.

Thank you, I'll just play it by ear and see how it goes. I had a dream of an introduction last time so I'm not expecting it to be as easy as it was then :D .

I love the body language of the 'oldies' shut in the 'sin bin' in the photos! They almost look like they have their hands on their hips! :D

I have had my oldies and newbies in a similar set up for 4 weeks. I let them out to free-range together, but it is Scarlett, who was bottom of the 'old' pecking order, who is the one who runs over to give the new girls a jealous peck every now and then. Honeysuckle is much more laid back, although she was top of the original pecking order.

There is no sign of them all deciding to bed down together yet. The new girls are clearly much less mature at the moment. I plan to let them decide for themselves.

I love your Corton Blue girls - dig that hairstyle...

The body language didn't change much today either, and their faces looked as if they had been sucking lemons  .

At one point the oldies were freeranging round the whole of the garden, outside the fence, so the newbies went into the oldies run and eglu and explored and ate all their food  . The oldies were stood on the outside of the fence helpless to stop this and going nuts, it was so funny.

I love my Corton Blues hairstyle too :D I play with it everytime i'm cuddling them  .

.

I'm beginning to feel sorry for them. How would you like strangers in your house. Oh yes you do :D I can't remember that expression from you though.

Ah, but Plum, those strangers didn't eat all the food. In fact we brought so much that poor Mostin and OH had to eat cake for a week afterwards  !

Off to give my chooks a lemon to see how they look :lol:

bless them, the oldies got their own back today as they got to play out in the fenced area all day and the newbies had to stay in the run.

Buuuuuuuuuuutttttt, suprise, suprise. Leala layed her 1st egg :dance: . It was 51 grams and greeny blue with brown speckles :D .

How unusual (you have blue egg on your signature). How is Robin?

I didn't realise there was a green one, I've change it now. Robin is doing really well and holding her own considering that she's the baby so she seems to be the target for everybody :( . Poor little thing, she's fearless though and I think once she gets as big as the rest she will be a force to be reckoned with  .
