Catering a wake - ideas please

Recommended Posts

Its my Mums funeral in a couple of weeks, & I am hosting the bash afterwards, for around 25 people. Alla dults, so I don't need to think about food for smallsters.

It will be about midday, so I want enough to feed those who are travelling home afterwards, without it being to party food ish........

I also have to think of costs :?

So, I am thinking a couple of cakes, Cherry cake is my speciality, & Clarets lemon drizzle will go down a treat, some home made sausage rolls & some cheesy straws....... rosemary & Parmesan & those parma ham & dolcelatte ones maybe.

I would love some more ideas, especially things I can make the day before so I am not rushing around on the day of the service.

Sorry to hear about your mum. :(

How about quiche? Or half a baked potato with some of the middle scooped out, then filled with cheese and peppers or cheese and bacon bits. It seems a bit more substantial but I'm not sure how far in advance you could do them. You could bake the potatoes in the morning and while you are out and they could fill the potatoes themselves, you will just needs bowls of filling. Anything else seems partyish :? Hope this helps.

For my mothers, we basically did an English tea party, with all her favourites, she was 81yr and my dad was still alive so he didnt want anything foreign or fancy as he put it. We had a neighbour bake about five cakes which seem over the top but they all went and they looked lovely on the table.

the best tip i can give you is to have a friend stay behind at the house not only to take care of the house ( it is known to have break ins during funerals ) but to get the food ready.

In our case it was my mums best friend she didnt like churches. So that was great she kept the tea pot filled.

what ever you do it will be fine

dont fret too much and take care,

liz

I am dropping the baked pots idea, in favour of things I can prepare in advance, so Quiche 7 those Spanokapittas it is!

I love those by the way Rhapsody, & always eat them in Greece, but we call the 'greek spinachy cheesy things' , so thats why I didn't recognise th name :lol:

Good idea, & it will give another veggie option too 8)

Sorry to hear of your loss - what about a large pot of soup also with your sausage rolls and sandwiches and your cakes. Soup is always warming and filling too.

Yes, super idea ('scuse the pun!)

I do a rather wonderful sweet potatoe & coconut soup with mild Thai spices, so maybe that would do

Sorry to hear about your mum Sarah.

I've not had to cater for a funeral but I'm part of a large Irish family and in England it's been cold finger buffet food (sausage rolls etc) with plenty of cake to go with cups of tea for after the funeral - lots of people come back to the house. (Ireland it's normal to have it catered in a hall)

In the past I've taken along a couple of loaves of tea bread. They keep for a few weeks so easy to do in advance. They are lighter than fruit cake and ideal served sliced and buttered with a cup of tea and if they aren't needed they are good for a whil afterwards.

I'd be happy to bake you a couple and leave them on your door step this coming w/e if it would help ?

Hi Patricia, thats so kind of you :D

I think I have it all under control now, but I am itching to get some baking done NOW (most stuff I am doing the day before), so if you could pass your tea bread recipe on I can make a start, which would make me feel a lot happier.

It would be great to feel like I had made a dent in the baking at least
