PhilipCaldwell
I work for a company that produces paper bedding for dairy cows, it is also good for chooks and have regular customers who bed their chickens on it.It is a waste paper bedding that is ultra clean and ultra absorbant, keeping the plumage clean and bacteria free, it is also biodegradeable as the majority of the material is basicly clay based. Does anybody elso bed them on waste paper bedding? here is the website http://www.envirosystems.co.uk/ arrives 16/02/09 arrive 16/02/
Hen Watch
Hi Philip, I have to say I'm a big fan of Auboise (hemp based horse bedding). Shredded paper I tried in the past (lots of folk use it on here ok) but my girls ate it.
Chookiehen
I've used shredded paper since I got the chickens - it lines the chickens, then gets composted and is a really effective way to ensure even the most persistent id thief is foiled! Bassett
I use aubiose mainly, but also sometimes shredded paper from my home shredder for the nest.
Egluntyne
I'm an Aubiose fan too.
PhilipCaldwell
The bedding we produce is really quiet different to chopped paper or chippings, what we do is take paper that cannot be recycled anymore and basically put it through a big tumble drier, this takes 95% of the moisture out so it is super absorbant (5 times more absorbant than sawdust). The low moisture content and the fact it is heat treated mean it is very sterile and bacteria free. However, it has never been tested on laying hens, our main customers are diary farms and for broiler hens. The farmers who use it with their broilers have commented that it keeps their plumage immaculate. If my chooks turn out to not like it then i will resort to more conventional methods, just thinking of saving myself some money ya see as i can take some home for free Will let ya know how they get on with it, only 4 sleeps till the chooks come!!!! Egluntyne
Is it available in less than industrial quantities?

Cooks
I know the stuff you mean, it looks like the stuff stuck to your best black top does after its been through a wash and dry with a tissue in the pocket! ... Just spluttered coffee at my screen again! that is such a good description ! I do use shredded paper from my parents shredder (my shredder broke ) in my nestbox when I have it, but I line it also with aubiose, Aubiose is great stuff. I have to say I have also bought Hemcore recently so I will have to see if I find any differences.. I also use it in the poop trays and scattered all over the walk in run (when it is back up and in use again)
stoice
know the stuff you mean, it looks like the stuff stuck to your best black top does after its been through a wash and dry with a tissue in the pocket! Sounds a little like megazorb to me click here. They use it in my nearest pets at home for their hamsters/mice/gerbils. Looks lovely and soft and fluffy. PhilipCaldwell
yes thats correct it is a similar product to megazorb, ours is much less lumpy than megazorb though because we put it through a crumbler, this makes it more absorbant . It however is only available in 27 tonne lorries or 1 tonne crates of 20kg bags, maybe a bit impracticle for the urban chicken keeper . Only 3 sleeps!!!! Cooks
yes I dont fancy a 1 tonne crate to get through
fluffyknickers
sounds good but can just imagine husbands face when a 1 tonne crate arrives! Will wait to see if its ever available in smaller quantities. x
dancing cloud
My little monsters have aubiose in the run and shredded paper for the nestbox and should your waste paper ever be available in domestic quantities, I'd probably give it a go. I tried mine with aubiose in the nestbox, and they sulked and produced fewer eggs until the usual shredded paper returned - little monsters indeed! nutterly_uts
I use megazorb and love it Its nice and soft for those belly crawls into the run for the occasional mislaid egg, and the chickens seem to love it too! Its the only thing my chickens keep in the nest box, and one of my silkies loves it so much she's gone broody (ok, ok, she's a silky so it would happen anytime but still LOL)
PhilipCaldwell
You can see the envirobed here in the roosting box and in the poop tray. Will keep ya posted on how they get on with it
