One Man Banned
That happy time of year has come about again and i've got my renewal. Last year I managed to get them to reduce it further as we had two other policies with Elephant but now there's only the two. Anyone got any good insurers they'd like to share Been to confused.com and got some good prices but I want to get my quote under the £250 pricetag! lowest so far is £280 (renewal price is £310) Anyone got any good tips to plead a discount? Paola
I always phone around and get it cheaper each year. I am with Virgin at the mo. If you want to pay it monthly you do not get charged any extra Good luck
Guest
Always lie about your renewal quote - last year I told Sheilas Wheels that my quote from Diamond was £30 cheaper than it actually was, and they matched it with, but with better breakdown cover included. One Man Banned
i've just phoned Elephant to work out a deal. As i want to change the mileage I do (from 9K to 20K) it upped the premium by £20. Nice chap contacted pricing department and they took an extra £30.40 off. Asked for any more and if it was the best they can do and his manager took an additional £20 off. Now down to £280 with them and NO excess but still short of my target. I've asked him to ring me back tomorrow and I'll go in for the kill and ask them for an even better price if I buy then on the phone and see what else I can get away with. Gosh this is hard work but worth it I guess!
Guest
I always shop around - but the best price I got this year - by a long way was with swiftcover.com you email your NCD discount proof and you download your certificate - and any other papers - they work with email and online ratyher than with posting out piles of paper... http://www.swiftcover.com/ they also have chicken on their advertising - which is always a benefit!!! Guest
ahh yes - I thought it was familiar... (don't ask Norwich Union to "quote you happy" - they've just increased their premiums by about 1000%...) good luck! Phil

Phil I may sue them for that statement - it was more a case of "Quote me a ridiculously high price so much so that it may drigger a myocardial infarction!" Louise
Last few years Quoteline direct have come up trumps for me I have tried every time to get a lower quote but never managed it mind you mine is really cheap anyway as my car is so old and worthless

Guest
Glad this has been posted, as I am currently doing the rounds of insurance companies I usually have a quote off Directline and then see who can beat it, but they are usually pretty good
Cinnamon
Yep, we do Direct Line too. They cover our house insurance too, so that gives us an extra discount (apparantly!) Is there ever a worse job that phoning around insurance companies.

clare*
Money saving expert is a fab site. I took out my car insurance last month and got £100 cashback for doing so. Go on the money saving website above and read about Quidco. Really easy cashback site to use. I took my car insurance out through prudential via the Quidco site and have just been paid £100 back They were actually the cheapest quote as well. Night Nurse
I managed to get a cheaper quote by going online as a 'new customer', and getting a quote that beat the renewal one that my insurers had sent me......Then phoned them up and told them about my little scam - they were a bit nonplussed, but had to go with the cheaper online quote.... As for Norwich Union - well, they refused point blank to insure my home contents because I have a joint mortgage with another person of the same gender to whom I am not married - apparently that makes me a 'higher risk' than they are happy with... Does this mean they think I have loads of disposable income, and therfore a house full of valuable antiques, or that I am constantly having wild parties and spilling claret over the Axminster?.......Not entirely sure, but didn't hang around to ask........ Popcorn
Is there ever a worse job that phoning around insurance companies. Sarah, you are so right. I hate doing it. Infact, I am guilty of being with Direct Line for the past 6 years, and just let them re-new me every year as I cannot bare to have the phone glued to my ear getting quote after quote. Maybe I should this time. Could do with some extra cash in my back pocket
Guest
Gina - you don't have to do the ringing around anymore - use one of the online screen-s"Ooops, word censored!"ers like Insure Supermarket or Confused.com they're not brokers in that they don't just pick from a limited group (like the AA do) - they compare a huge number of providers and you only have to type in the details once - then they give you the results in a handy chart. If you use them both - (that means typing the info twice) - then you cover just about every insurer you could possible think of!! the full instructions for slashing your car-insurance are here: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/viewnews.cgi?newsid1092813037,41960, good luck, Phil
One Man Banned
I have found a good trick to lower the confused.com prices even further. When you have the quote you want from the results go directly to that insurers website and requote it - worked every time and took at least another £5 off! One Man Banned
RESULT! TARGET: Insurance at £250 RENEWAL: £310 Nice chap at Elephant called me back today as promised to check I was happy with the price. Told him I had checked out a few more places and got the premium down to £276. (lie! ) I really stressed how much I wanted the premium to be just £250 this year and that I don't need my mileage to be at 20K as I'll be getting a company car soon. Yesterday it added £20 - today it took off £30!! Plugged for a good deal to buy today and the renewal price I have accepted is.... £239! Not bad for a little bit of effort!
