cooperbro
We currently have 8 bantams and 3 full size chickens all of which are laying, we have just had a complaint from our neighbour about the clucking noise in the mornings. Is there any way we can keep there noise level down ? if not then well be having a lot of chicken dinners.
AnnieP
Oh dear! We have had lots of questions like this before. The best trick is to make their run/house as dark as possible, so people have thrown extra blankets or similar over them in an effort to delay dawn. Obviously as the days draw out, it can become problematic. Strange how some people love the clucking noise that chickens make, whilst others find it annoying. The only other thing I can suggest is an olive branch to your neighbours on a regular basis of eggs, so they get to have some of the benefits of your pets too! Good luck! Egluntyne
Perhaps a distraction in the run, such as some greens to peck at or dry corn to rootle about for might occupy them for a while and keep them quiet. Bribery with eggs is a good idea. Once they have tasted those they should be won over.
Hen Watch
Hi and welcome to the forum. What does you neighbour object to? General "egg announcements" which stop after a while or "clucking and minding their own business" sort of regular noises or do they make a racket to be let out to free range? And what time do you mean by mornings? Crack of dawn, breakfast time, or mid-morning? If your lot are egg announcing then there's not much you can do. If it's really early morning noise, can you keep them shut in their housing until a reasonable time so the housing dulls the noise? My lot are shut in their eglu until 7.30am every day then let out into the run. Maybe darken the run/housing. As you have 11 in total, are there enough nestboxes to go round? I only say that as I had a noise problem last summer when they all decided to lay at lunchtime and one chook bok bokked really loudly for 20 mins whilst she was waiting for it to be vacated. I ended up putting a temporary 2nd nestox in for her.

Chillicat
Sorry to cut across a family reunion We have a noise problem..........with flippin' birds cheeping and twittering away at 5am has anyone else noticed this? Reminds me of that bird film...... Anyway, interesting post about the possibility of not having enough room when laying........I wondered why we sometimes have a musical (more like a murder ) carrying on! Looks like you're gonna have to get up earlier, unless you have a large dark blanket Hope you find a solution that works for you

cooperbro
Excellent advice, thankyou to everyone!! I covered up any areas where light may get in and didn't let them out until 9.00am. I called on the neighbours later on and asked them if it had worked. They answered 'yes it had'. I also took them some eggs, which they were really chuffed with, so all is ok
HENthusiastic
How about geting a large blanket to throw over your neighbour! Or you could also get them a nice cheap pair of ear plugs?
