Wormery

Recommended Posts

I am interested in starting a Wormery for compost. I have looked at the prices on line, but after my successful chicken house building project think I can probably make my own and get the worms from somewhere. I am sure I have read references on posts on the forum about wormeries, and an Omleteer who 'keeps' worms. Is there any information/advice they are willing to share? Thanks!

I have the can o' worms set up and have run it now for six years without any disasters. I think it's great - all organic waste goes in it and lovely compost and nutrient liquid comes out, with very little fuss or bother :D

Wormeries are probably not too difficult to build yourself (too difficult for me though!). If you have a google you could see the different designs available commercially to base your own on and there's a good book called "Worms Eat My Garbage" that's full of useful information. You can get it from wigglywigglers and they also sell worms for worm bins once you've designed yours :D

I don't pretend to be an expert, but am happy to answer any questions as best I can. It's so easy even I can do it!

Many thanks! I have found a diy wormery on the internet at:

http://www.eastsussex.gov.uk/NR/rdonlyres/6EB1C3FA-723E-4F03-8806-74A73B7BDC83/0/stacking_wormery.pdf

(Just in case anyone else fancies having a go!) and have been to the local tackle shop to buy some Dendrobaena, although I have no idea if I have enough - I will unpack them tomorrow and have a count!

Luckily I had a big clear out over half term and freed up some stacking storage boxes. Today I fitted a tap to one (from my husband's ancient beer brewing barrel that has been in the shed for eons) and have cut holes in two others to fit weldmesh. Tomorrow I will build a little platform for the wormery to stand on and see how I go on from there!

:lol::lol: at the thought of you spreading worms out and counting them!

I have got hold of some tyres and am planning to stack them with different sizes of weldmesh between them to create a wormery.

Just printed the PDF and guess what I will be doing tomorrow :D

had a clear out in the box room and the garage during the week and have three lovely storage boxes that can be used. Just need to buy a lid. I wonder if they are sold seperately.

I am going to make a lid out of some spare wood (that the neighbours keep giving me since I built a chicken house!).

I DID have a quick estimation of worms today and I really think that I am going to need more. The cheapest ones I have found on line so far are these:

http://www.bucketofworms.co.uk/Onlineshop/viewitem.php?groupid=0&productid=2

The tyres idea is a very good one - I am just a bit worried that my stack of boxes might blow over in a high wind - that wouldn't happen with tyres. I am going to extend the 'little platform' I am building to support the sides of the 'tower' of boxes.

Well, the will definately have to be a Show and Tell with photos of all the wormeries on the forum in the very near future!

sainsburys have some special offer stacking boxes with lids at the moment

"Strata large box" only 99p each!

The are quite big and compared to the others about £3+ cheaper each

I picked up 4 on saturday for a temporary use ...then will turn them into my wormery!!

hiya,

the worms should regulate their numbers depending on how much waste you put in - the more you put in the more they will reproduce! I've got the type that came with the can o' worms and when I'm s"Ooops, word censored!"ing out the bottom tier I find lots of little yellow eggs - not sure if your worms eggs will be the same colour though!
