tania
Only me ....again! I've been reading lots of posts and many talk about giving the girls breakfast. Is this something I shold be doing too I wonder? Why do you give them brekkie and not just, as I have been doing, their pellets & what do you give them? I have also been reading about these various supplements, limstone flour, garlic etc and I'm getting very confused.
Egluntyne
I only ever give mine their pellets.....unless the weather is particularly cold and then I very occasionally give them something warm....usually a porridge made with pellets and hot water. I think it makes me feel better than it does them! There is no need to bother in reality, just make sure that they can access their pellets at any time of day. poachedegg
As long as your chickens have their layer pellets, water and grit available to them, then that isall that is necessary - anything extra is because we spoil them! I make a porridge up (pellets amd warm water) during the day every couple of days, as it is an excellent way of including any food supplements. The ones I use regularly are garlic powder (horse version not human one) as this stops the poo from smelling, bokashi bran to firm the poos up, and crushed eggshells (bake any used eggshells in the oven, put in a tea towel and roll with a rolling pin until in tiny pieces) as they make the shells stronger. I only use limestone powder if any are laying softies and poultry spice I only use on the ex batts, however is supposed to be good if chickens are going through a moult or under the weather. When I first started I only used the garlic powder and egg shells, I bought the bokashi bran at a later stage, the limestone when we had a few softies and only got the poultry spice last month when I got the ex batts - so you don't have to have everything - you will find that you aquire things as and when necessary. Electricbarbarella
I would say the asme , I give mine porridge every morning but mainly because the ex batts are on pellets and I have most of a 20kg bag of mash left so I may as well use it uo, also it is a good way to make sure the ex batts get their poultry spice. Also the big girls have a real thing about cocopops, because I hate s"Ooops, word censored!"ing them into the the bin so I just put my childrens bowls out and collect them back 2 mins later all eaten. Mrs Webmuppet
Mine have warm mash with supplements in the morning with any left over veg or salad from tea......but only in the winter. Even the newbies have got used to breakfast and stand by the run door waiting.
Tessa the Duchess
Mine don't have breakfast except their pellets, however they do have lunch They get a small dish of warm porridge oats plus any bits that were left over from our supper at about midday when I first let them out to freerange. If I don't provide this they squawk their heads off Tessa
