Gave my girls some chopped up leek this morning. Left in long strands, and they were fighting for it! Pulling it out of each others beaks. Hilarious to watch!

 

Would not touch it a couple of months ago...

 

Now it is apparently the best thing since... well, anything!!

 

I bet they hate it tomorrow though...

Do leeks make the eggs taste funny? It's just that I've read onions can have a poor effect on the eggs. Funny though, that feeding of garlic is encouraged to lessen poo smells.

Yep, they love leeks - we had to barricade ours off because they were mowing the tops off the ones around the edge. I'd open the back door to smell - leeks! Arghhh! Hah, all gone now though and the remains are in the freezer. They did go to that spot as if expecting the leeks to reappear, but then discovered insects and raked the bed over nicely for me.

But that will explain why the whites of the eggs tasted a little, um for want of a better word, bitter - and not done so since.

We offered ours leek and they turned up their beaks! Obviously, whatever else was around at the time was more tempting!

The first time I read your post I thought it was the remains of the CHICKENS that were in the freezer! Actually, leek-flavoured chicken wouldn't be as bad as leek-flavoured eggs.

 

We managed to get a crop of leeks 2 years ago without trouble, but all the PSB went despite being barricaded behind netting. The chickens burrowed under, led by an intrepid cockerel chick we had at the time.

 

In our household, bananas are the new mealworms. We don't have banana trees, by the way, they have to be purchased at great expense in the usual manner. They are 'free-range' (aka fair trade) usually.

Don't worry Kirstine, the girls are still up to no good elsewhere in the garden! Apparenly my runner bean trench was spotted with Cheyenne at the bottom of it being buried by the other two digging the soil back in! I probably have come closer to chopping up my children and putting them in the freezer, but as that hasn't happened (yet), I think the chickens are pretty safe!
