Gracefruit has posted about it as well as me on the 'What are you excited about?' thread. So - who else on here is happy to confess to being a Trekkie or a Jedi-in-waiting? Guest Posted March 22, 2009 Share Posted March 22, 2009 I'm a bit of a trekkie, I like the allegorical quality of the storylines in Star Trek. I prefer the later ones though, not keen on Captain Kirk and the storylines from way back when although, Star Trek has been pretty groundbreaking! The first on screen kiss between a white man and a black woman was btwn Kirk and Uhuru. I also loved Deep Space Nine. I'm with Poet though and I prefer Jean Luc etc to the earlier stuff. Also like Deep Space Nine, Quantum Leap (does that count?). There was another one that had an Australian type feel about it. It was about 5 years ago give or take. Can't for the life of me think what it was. Nice looking bloke in it who looks a bit like Maxwell Caulfield in his younger days. Guest Posted March 22, 2009 Share Posted March 22, 2009 I used to like 'Saphire and Steel', there was one episode that really freaked me out where some malevolent force was able to kill people by using their photographs, or something like that. I also used to watch 'The Twlight Zone' and actually quite a lot of sci-fi when I was younger. laurmurf Posted March 22, 2009 Share Posted March 22, 2009 (edited) I'm so old that I was one of the original petitioners in the '60's to keep Star Trek on telly in the States... went to my first (and only, I hasten to add) convention when I was 14 - an original Trekkie! I've grown up since then, of course , so I'm only mad for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly and Serenity (now I'm a brown coat), Heroes, Chuck.... more gothy then trekkie. I remember Sapphire and Steel, Quantum Leap, Twilight Zone, X Files - loved them! I actually got in trouble for laughing during Star Wars when there was some particularly wooden acting from Mark Hammell ) Adore Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but again as someone else has said, I don't know if that counts! Valkyrie Posted March 22, 2009 Share Posted March 22, 2009 Stargate SG1 and Atlantis for me (RIP withdrawal symptoms being suffered here). Funny thing, the two main characters from Farscape appeared as main characters in the last couple of SG1 series. Preferred the old Star Trek, not fussed with the other spin-offs. I liked the theme to the last one, Enterprise. Liked Quantum Leap - I don't know whether he ever got back home, a bit like Time Tunnel I suppose. Enjoyed Farscape, but never got to see all the episodes (before Sky+, conflicting with OH's viewings). I also like A Town Called Eureka - silly, but quite amusing. I also preferred the old Battlestar Gallactica - Dirk Benedict ! Also from younger days Buck Rogers, Lost in Space, the X Files (tried watching it again from the start the other week - yuk!). Generally when it comes to Sci-Fi I'm more a reader than a watcher, I love anything Pratchett (specially my alter-ego Nanny Ogg). I've read 1984, Brave New Word, Farenheit 851 (sorry I don't remember the number, as I read this book in Spain over 25 years ago!), Logan's Run and a few others I don't remember the names of. I have also been enjoying Being Human (about a very sexy vampire, a cute werewolf and a pretty girl ghost). ...and Bewitched, very 60s, predictable but sweet. I'm not too keen on modern films about witches - they all make it look so weird! Scriptwriters should read the Discworld series to find out what real witches are all about... I think it's farenheit 451 without googling? Supposedly the temperature at which books burn!? I thought Equilibrium was a better film but along similar lines. Loved Buffy and Being Human, Star Wars and the later Star Treks (when I got chance to watch them ) Now books are another matter - David and Lee Eddings (probably more fantasy), Anne McCaffrey, Terry Pratchett, Mercedes Lackey, Julian May - now I can't think of many authors or titles, but I've probably read hundreds over the years. John Varley's Gaea Trilogy and Hospital Station by James White are probably my favourite books, but mostly I watch rather than read... (other than Discworld - Granny Weatherwax wannabe) Christian obviously one fancies Worf and possibly Data. I like my sci-fi fairly slick, so as the TNG ages I begin to dislike it. I like special effects and sophisticated gadgetry - don't really go in for the moralistic storylines. Loved Firefly & Serenity, BSG, SG1, SG Atlantis - you name it... never reallly got into Farscape or Babylon 5 and there are now too many series for me to keep up with.
