Well despite my best efforts last night the OH said "well i dont know why your looking at chicken coops cos were not getting any"then he went on about it being impossible to keep them in our garden ect.

 

so thats the end of that.

you've tried taking him to visit someone with an eglu or cube? Such a shame. In my experience, once they are there, they work their charm...

I agree with Patricia, perhaps if he sees them in situ he might change his mind. I only have a small garden and they fit just fine, they don't take up much room.

that's a shame. I have to agree with the others, ask him to compromise by at least visiting to look at an eglu, if he wont compromise to that at least.. tell him to grow up. ;)

What a shame . Whereabouts are you? If you find someone closeby could you persuade him to visit it? (Or visit it yourself and then pester him till he says yes .)

 

My garden is pretty small too, probably less than 10m square. We also back onto fields and my girls have never attempted to escape.

I wore my OH down by constantly thinking of new chicken puns until he caved in! Such as... Its not much to shell out. Its a poultry price to pay for a happy wife. Its an eggcellent Easter Present. Its eggsactly what we need to entertain the god children. Etc etc.

 

When he saw that I wan't giving up, he gave in!

 

Cube on order, breeder warned, garden prepared!!

 

A few weeks time, I'll be a chicken mum (and the cat and dog will have one heck of a shock!)

I usually try the "upset" face. Cook his favourite tea and when he asks you "whats wrong" say "well I really wanted a few chickens....its my dream" and put the sad bambi face on and flutter those eyelids.

MY OH although not really a humpty grumpy doesnt have a lot to do with any of our animals so i just went ahead and ordered it..Now its all built Wir my moi he suddenly is a little interested as he does like boiled eggs. he even volunteered to drill the screws on the door i made at the weekend..mind u he then went back to the sofa for yet another nap....

 

So am sure he will come round...u need to see one they wont b any trouble as long as u have a secure run as htey put themselves to bed at night too!!

Don't be daft you don't give up. You have to be in for the long haul.

When he says you aren't having any don't get upset just say you are still considering it and looking how to get around the problems (his idea of problems ). Read a lot and ask questions on here then you can quote the replies and he knows you are serious. Just don't acknowledge his nos, say you have worries too but have found out.......

Buy the odd Practical Poultry as well and give him a chicken mug.

How big is your garden? A couple of Bantams would hardly take up any room.

 

I think it's really sensible of your OH to think of the space and security of any potential pets. However I really think you need to explore all avenues before writing off your dream.

 

Have you looked at the wooden arks as they don't take up much room or maybe see if you could fit an eglu in a 6 x 6 rabbit run.

Take pictures, bring back some fresh eggs, find an article about salmonella or something from shop bought eggs.... you get the idea?? the pester power of children usefully harnessed?

 

It's a brave (and foolish ) man who doesn't opt for the quiet life! ( we are in our 41st year of marriage - he's coming on quite nicely now... )

I've been buying Good Housekeeping for years but somehow it has never worked...

 

I found early on that if any aspect of housework involved machines, that I never QUITE understood how they worked - and lo! only OH could operate them "properly".

OH got the chickens under the 'one year rule'.

This was a rule we made up for his kids (in fact he and his ex might have made it up before I came on the scene, I can't remember) by which if you have your heart set on anything, however silly, and keep asking for it, you get it after a year. Obviously the completely unaffordable doesn't count, but my stepdaughter once got a drum for her birthday under the rule and OH got his chickens.

last night i said what are you looking at on the computer and he replied with well I'm not looking at keeping chickens in my back garden.(in a sarcastic voice too)

 

i didn't rise to it, i thought yes i will just leave it for a bit and then go asking again .like said above at least then he will know I'm serious and he cant say after 20 years of tropical fish keeping and breeding Ive not been serious about that.see how I'm now using that idea to get my own way

 

Anyway off i pop to conjure up more ideas to get my own way and do my homework on chickens

 

anymore ideas welcome,i feel i may need to educate him a bit on this as he seems to think against this one before even looking into it at all.

Leave it for a while then just get them, once they are there, they are there! I am sure they will work their magic and he will not want to get rid of them. I didn't tell my Mum and Dad, just got them! and to my surprise (although I was nervous when they were due home from work) they fell about laughing and love them. Now they both think they are from 'the good life' and tell all their friends about them!

 

May not be the best idea on reflection but a suggestion!

He sounds a lot like my OH, very firmly saying no, you must be mad we're not having chickens.....

 

Then, just before my birthday, a nice man in an Omlet van turned up with my purple cube (OH even got the colour right!) and the next day we were booked in to get ex-battery hens!!

 

He said - I said we're not getting them, but YOU can have them!!!

 

So fingers crossed for you too!

Hi, I used to be the grumpy wife who never wanted chickens and couldn't see why my husband wanted them ... but somehow they arrived and now that we have them I think they're fab and wouldn't be without them!

 

They are the perfect egg makers, their poo makes excellent compost, they eat slugs, they de-moss the lawn (just don't leave them too long or they'll de-grass it for you too!), they are funny to watch especially when they squabble over a worm and run away with it with the others chasing behind, they talk to you (and you can talk back), and there is nothing more relaxing than having a cup of tea outside in the garden and watching your girls.

 

So advice from the converted ... go for it!

 

Just remember ... the chickens know everything
