Pizza Hut - the plot thickens

Recommended Posts

I may be asking a daft question here but here we go.

My son went out to pizza hut yesterday.

When he got home he was told us how he had asked the waitress if they used free range chicken and she said that they did. he explained to her that he kept chickens of his own and that he only ate free range or organic chicken.

I didn't think that they used free range but thought that I would ask you lot.

Update:

I have just phoned the head office and they told me that they didn't know.

:?

Then I telephoned the restaurant concerned and they said that they were not sure. The manager spoke to me and said that he couldn't guarantee that it was free range. I then asked why one of his waitresses lied to my son yesterday. He then said that he was only covering his back when he said that it wasn't free range and that if I wanted to call back in ten minutes that he would try to find out for me. I said that I would like him to find out.

Watch this space.

If I managed a restaurant and we used free range chicken then I would be very sure to advertise the fact, at the very least showing it clearly on the menu. If the restaurant is paying a premium for a better quality product, you'd think they'd want to make sure the customer knew it.

There's no excuse for the waitress telling your son it's free range if either it isn't or it might not be. It's completely dishonest. You wouldn't tell a vegetarian something was meat-free if it wasn't.

The manager now says that he does not know what the chicken is but that he would assume that it isn't free range. I pointed out that he needs to have a conversation with his serving staff about the chicken in case they are asked in future. He apologised and said that he would.

It amazes me that neither head office or the managers know anything about the products that go into their food.

Mmmm!

Hmm indeed!

I've only ever been there once and studiously avoided any chicken or egg products... in fact any meat products at all.

Good for you Janty, at least the restaurant manager was honest about it.

Perhaps Disappointed Son might like to write them an email/letter telling how unhappy he is that he was told porkies. Copies to Trading Standards would elicit a swift response

It is quite appalling the number of places who tell you they serve free range chicken, when they don't.

Nick and I do mystery dining and I always ask two questions: 1) are the eggs free range and 2) is the chicken free range. What restaurants seem to be confused over is that Grade A chicken does not mean free range. I have pointed this out, but seems to no avail, as each time we have been back to a particular restaurant and ask the questions again, along comes the same answer!

I had issues with Pizza Hut too.

My daughter has allergies to things and at this point I refer to she couldnt have any dairy products.

I asked them for the list of ingredients in their pizza dough - answer was they didnt know and couldnt tell me as it came in ready made. So I said it wasnt good enough but was there now so could they tell me what was in their spaghetti bolagnaise answer was "no we dont know but I know even the children's one has loads of salt so not great for kids.

So she ended up having some bits from the salad bar and waiting til we got home to eat properly.

I wrote to Pizza Hut and they said that all restaurants should have all the ingredients and sent me a money off voucher for my NEXT VISIT!!! ha ha ha

Havent been back.

Oh yes they do!!! - I've had 'vegetarian' soup with bits of meat in it and pasta with ham in it before now (I thought it was only France that thinks ham isn't meat  ) - and had to send the food back. They just hope you won't notice and are quite put out when you do. No doubt they laugh behind your back when you don't.

I would say that if they have to think about it or go and ask someone else that you could be sure that it isn't free-range :( As Anne says, they would shout it from the rooftops and plaster it over their TV advertising.

.....to lie to a child who has asked a specific question is unforgivable :(

I had that loads of times when I was travelling in Prague a number of years back with a youth orchestra. Everything had meat in it even when they said it didn't !

Husband and i no longer eat chicken but if we ever did would only eat free range. We also only eat products made using free range eggs.....you wouldn't believe the hassle of finding this information out sometimes!!! We tend to just never eat out anymore!!

I do think it is appauling though that your son could be told it was free range and then to find out it was not!!!

Good for him Jan, I like youngsters with a conscience.

It says something that a child of his age has more moral fibre than an international chain!

He has asked me to say 'Thank you' for saying this about him.

Little old man that he is!

This thread has highlighted just how little is known about the food we eat when out - when even those cooking it haven't a clue what is in it! I've just spent a few days camping with my friend and her son who is coeliac. Eating out was a nightmare - I hadn't realised how difficult it could be for her! In one restaurant we managed to find him a gluten free option, only for it then to be served with a side salad containing pasta. The next restaurant was much more helpful and aware, even preparing something specially for him, but still managed to serve him coleslaw made from mayonnaise containing gluten

Jan I hope your son gets a good response from Pizza Hut :notalk:

Claret

Have you tried Wagamama?

I have food allergies, and if you ask they bring out a special annotated menu, with what has seafood/shellfish in it amongst other things, and what you can ask to have left out as they make up all the dishes individually. Last time I had a chilli dish and they said the chilli sauce had fish in it, so they left it out and put in real chillis instead.

I haven't had the courage to ask about the chicken, though! Does anyone know?

He's most welcome, Rosie is the same and questions in restaurants. It's good that they feel able to ask and assert their right in this way. She was born with an old head on her shoulders!

Thanks Kirstine, but there isn't one around here that I know of. I just have to remain watchful  some friends own a Thai restaurant locally and they always cook everything from scratch (unlike Gordon Ramsay  ) so are very accommodating. The odd thing is that I became allergic to them, I used to love bivalves, but it got progressively worse.

Well done Janty and son!

We had to pitstop in McDonalds for coffee yesterday and I just wanted water. I asked the child serving me if I could have tap water as I don't agree with trucking bottled water around the world when we have taps and he told me that they couldn't serve me any water from the taps 'because of health and safety'. Makes you wonder what they are putting in the chicken and the water and everything else doesn't it?!
