Definitely keep her from the others until it has settled and nothing is showing.

£73 I have to say I think I would have baulked at that too, thats a lot of money.

Well, we brought her inside and cleaned her bum up. There was really quite a lot of blood.

 

Once it was clean, we noticed that a bit of her was hanging out. Rung the vets, they think its a prolapse. So, we could either try and push it back in, or take her to the vets, which would be £73 just for the consultation.

 

We all love the hens, but we couldn't justify spending £73 plus treatment costs on a hen that cost about £5. Mum spoke to the vets and advised her to try to push it back in.

 

. So, my mum managed to get it back inside, got it all cleaned up & sprayed purple. Took her outside, put her on her own in the with food water etc. Will leave her there untill monday morning when the vets should be cheaper. The other 14 are going to have to squish up in tonight .

 

Edited - Just been outside, the bit of her bum is hanging out again .

 

Also, I know it sounds tight leaving her to 'suffer', but she's walking around, eating, drinking and still pecking our fingers so she seems okay in herself. We thought £73 was just a massive amount of money to spend on a hen. I dont mean "she's a hen, we dont care" but it really is too expensive. Does anybody understand or do you all think that was mean and cruel?

I understand exactly what you are saying. I despatched my poor old Artemis Fowl only this morning as she was very ill, and I wasn't prepared to spend large amounts of money on futile attempts to keep an elderly hen alive. It was her time to go and it was done humanely.

 

Might be worth keeping your hen on a very bland diet, such as weetabix, or wheat or barley, if you can get hold of some. It isn't as nutritious and might just hold back on egg laying. You could also try keeping her in the dark for a couple of days for the same reason.

 

If the prolapse is swollen, applying some haemorrhoid ointment will cause it to shrink and make it easier to push back in.

Sorry about your poor girl Scrambled. I hope the prolapse settles.

I don't know the vet would do anything different to what your mum did.

Perhaps they can give some hormones to stop her ovulating for a bit and rest her tackle.
