Alma
Hi, I'm wondering if anyone has a recipe for making peckablocks. I've heard that you can make your own, as they are quite expensive. I would be really grateful if anyone could share theirs. Alma
PurpleTree
I've been thinking of posting exactly the same question, so will be interested in any replies. I've saved the hooks from the 3 I've bought in the past, in the hope I could do something with them
Patricia W
Although they seem expensive - they last aaaaages..... I've had one hanging up for months - they nibble if from time to time but it's quite hard and so is taking a long time to disappear. Redwing
Cut and pasted from another forum You will need a stick of some sort, garden cane works well, cut a piece of cane and drill a hole near one end for hanging it up. Next collect the ingredients you want to add, mixed corn, pellets etc. Crack a fresh egg into a bowl, mix the egg with a few dessert spoons of flour & a drop of water. So that it forms a runny paste. Cut a long wide piece of kitchen tin foil. Then in the bowl that you have the mixed egg & flour, add the mixed corn etc, mix it all up so the mixed corn & pellets start to stick together. Give it a good mix so that everything is coated. Spoon the mix onto the tin foil to make a long sausage shape, you can add the stick through the middle at this stage. Then wrap the foil around the ingredients and press firmly so it sticks together to form a sausage like shape. Then put it in the oven at 120 degrees for an hour to let it dry out slowly. Check it's hard, if not leave a bit longer then let it cool and let the birds test it out.
Ain't Nobody Here
That's sounds easy enough . Have you tried it out yet, Tasha ?
Sheilaz
Thanks for the recipe, I'm going to try it this week. I was just thinking today that my flock could do with some more, but mine were demolished really quickly last time. This looks a cheaper option, I'll try & make them soon & report back. telechookies
Hi, Apart from cabbage and peckablocks, anyone else have any good ideas to 'bust boredom'?
Alma
Thanks for the recipe Tasha. Sounds great. Will certainly give it a try. Alma
PurpleTree
Thanks for the recipe, that sounds quite easy. This may be a silly question, but as I said before I've saved the hooks from previous Peckablocks, with the red plastic bit still attached. If I used this to make homemade peckablocks do you think the plastic would melt in the oven? Sorry if I'm sounding a bit dull.
Sheilaz
ooooh, that's a point, I don't know. I was wondering about using string & whether or not it would work? Mmmmm, we'll have to experiment.
Redwing
That's sounds easy enough . Have you tried it out yet, Tasha ? No not yet, I was very tired after going to all the effort to steal the recipe from another forum I reckon those plastic hooks will melt yes. Janty
Hi, Apart from cabbage and peckablocks, anyone else have any good ideas to 'bust boredom'? I use these filled with apples and pears, etc. I hang them from the eglu and cube runs on chains. http://www.wigglywigglers.co.uk/shop/product.html?product_id=51&-session=shopper:518D20870a6d5334CFQku13011A5

Raina
OOooo Thanks for the recipe! Do you think you could make it in a cake tin then make a hole in the middle and hang some string through if you don't have any sticks?
Patricia W
I would think so, Raina And for those who have Peckablok bits - I think you could use the the plastic bit AFTER you've cooked the block. I'll wait and see how you lot get on, then I might have a go ..
