sgregson
Hi My eldest son has come home from school today with a letter that it's pets week next week at school and he's desperate to take along Rosie (his chicken). So, my question is what do people think about this? Would it be ridiculous as we've not had them very long and I'm also guessing that it will freak the poor girl out... I obviously recognise that it will be great for the children to see a chicken and be able to take along an egg or two! There's a form we need to fill in and I think we'll be given a slot so we won't be there for hours. Any thoughts anyone? Sal
Jules.
I took Buzz to school a couple of months ago, as part of the " what our mums do" project for Mothering Sunday Lots of other mums of the Reception children went in too at various other times to talk about their jobs & hobbies etc. I'm sure I made the best impression Buzz was great, but then she is really placid & is my demo chicken at hen parties, & so really used to being handled. I was only there for about 1/4 hour max, Buzz was outside in a little fenced in play area, & I dropped lots of mealworms onto the tarmac to keep her occupied I took in a few layers pellets to show the children what she eats, & showed them an egg & her different types of feathers, & then those who wanted to gave her a stroke while she was held in hubby's arms The teacher took photos of her, which were up on the overhead at the Mothers Day assembly, while my son proudly announced to eveyone there " My mum looks after chickens"!!!! Go for it, it's a doddle & really "playground cred worthy "

Egluntyne
I've done it. A very successful and enjoyable day. There is a risk assessment form on the Omlet Website that you can download for the elfnsafety if you need to.
Mrs Kettle
I took Buffy into my daughter's yr 2 classroom. She was quite calm, let them stroke her, stalked around and pooed on the carpet! (Have baby wipes handy!) A successful trip all round!
fluffyknickers
This is really interesting as was going to ask about taking a chicken into my sons class. They are all 4 and 5 years and I thought I could just take my in a box and take along an egg, food, rubber egg to make them laugh (my son thinks its hilarious!!!) and then hold her and let them have a stroke and look and tell them about her comb and wattle and where the eggs come out of. I would just want to ensure I didnt upset and cause problems. x
TAJ
I haven't taken a chicken, but now a batch of chicks that went in. When DD was that age and they were supposed to take the pet for the whole day she wanted to take the cat. Are then cat (now dead) was fine on a lead and harness and the teacher made all the kids sit quitely in a ring and all was fine. sgregson
Hi Just thought I'd let you know that I took Rosie in for half an hour this morning and it went down a storm with the teacher and the children. The teacher was very interested in finding out about the eglu I do think Rosie was pleased to get back home though - never had so many strokes all at once and Josh was so proud Ella mentioned it to pre-school this morning and now they're interested in me taking one in for them Sal

My friend in work brought her 6 week old border collie pup in to the office today and everyone loved it, it raised morale incredibly. Its now been suggested that I bring one of the chooks in!!!!! Just goes to show, even when we're grown up and working, we're all still children at heart!
