When I've been egg collecting the last few days, I haven't had any. I was left feeling very confused by this as it was a sudden complete stop, from having 5 a day. Was getting all prepared to worm them again this morning, just in case, when looking out my window at 7am (having just got up to get th girls ready for school) I notice 8 chooks happily freeranging in my garden Now they are confined to the back of the garden by a fence to stop them getting at my veg patch (of which they ate half my lettuces ), but I leave that open once I have locked them in their coop for the night to make it easier for me getting up to them the next day. No way could it have blown open, the lock is too tight for that. So obviously someone has been climbing over our 6 foot fence and stealing my eggs and inadvertently let the girls out as well this morning. SO I have now bought a great big padlock, and let them just try to get any more!

I would be tempted to move the hens into the shed for the night & arm the nesting box with a mouse trap or 2

I'd probably try that tonight aswell! with the webcam/camera set up to film it .

Or even better, a hidden camera in the hen house

 

Just be careful that they don't damage the house trying to break the padlock off.

Mustard eggs - fabulous Eglutine! Make sure you get a hot one!! Or put a sign up on your coop - fertilised eggs - not suitable for human consumption. That will get them worried , even though we eat them, they might think ugh oh my god! - they won't know you haven't got a cockerel!

 

There are some awful cheeky nasty people about!

Soooo love that idea lol! Well I have got 4 lovely eggs today (with the girls safely padlocked in) I can safely say that if they manage to get in tonight I'll be stunned. Still can't get over the fact that they have been climbing over out fence to do this. It must be early in the morning or late at night as well. Lucky ( ) they didn't break their necks really, as we have quite a drop after the little ledge that runs along the fenceline. I do have my very strong suspicions as to who it may be though. We have a family who live across the road, 6 kids who run wild, and they make the kids 'aquire' all sort of things!

Good idea! leave some eggs in the airing cupboard for a while then put those out in the nestbox

LOL, some absolutely fab ideas on here Having spen thte night safely padlocked in their coop, I'm glad to report that I picked up another 4 eggs this morning And I know one of them usually lays in the afternoon, so will have my 5 by the end of the day.
