Elliptical/cross trainers - opinions please

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am trying to get fit and so far doing great (11 lbs lost in 2 weeks!) and would like to get a piece of home gym equipment. For several weeks I have been looking at getting an elliptical trainer to put in the spare room (will come in handy to hang the washing on... ).

Does anyone have one, or have any experience using one. The model I have seen is a "York" brand and is quite expensive.

Any dislikes/opinions very appreciated, credit card and fingers ready waiting to order!! :D

You are right they are fantastic to hang washing on!

And for that reason

DON'T BUY ONE.

Someone will have one with washing hanging on that needs a new home. Ask/look on freecycle, get down your local boot sale (they are quite large so LOOK for a picture of one stuck on someones car window - seen everything from bikes through to 5 bed detatched houses being sold in this way!!!). Scan the small ads in your local paper/shops.

I had one for a while - I think I got my money back when I sold it - but only because I didn't pay too much in the first place!

My son asked for one of these two christmas's ago. I managed to get one from Freecycle :)

It took three of us to get it up two flights of stairs to the bedroom he shares with his girlfriend. To my knowledge he has never used it, and it is indeed draped with clothing. It really needs putting back on Freecycle but comtemplating getting it back down the stairs is a bit daunting  Don't buy one!

I have a Nordic track Elliptical trainer and I love it, I use it most days, you can change the resistance to suit your fitness levels and it gives you a good gentle workout. I damaged my knee a few months ago and it swells when I jog or use my bike but the elliptical trainer is gentle enough to not bother it.........In fact I ran a mile uphill on it yesterday and my knee is fine although i felt like I had a really good workout.

Blimey Chelsea, you'll waste away!

I use a Nordic at the gym and find them great exercise especially if your joints are a bit dodgy (mine are, after years of teaching...... fitness  ). I can really recommend them for CV work and for tightening up your bum and thighs without the stress on your joints. Just take it easy on the levels when you first start or you won't be able to walk!

Elliptical trainers are good if you've got dodgy knees, they don't put the pressure on them that orbital trainers do and they burn more calories than treadmills for the equivalent amount of time you are on them.

In saying that, I used one regularly when I was a member of a gym, but since my membership ran out in March and we decided not to renew, I've only been down to the bottom of the garden 3 times to use the cross-trainer we have.

It's much harder to motivate yourself in your own home. It's easier to make yourself go and do it elsewhere, especially if you are paying for it! :D

Thanks for the feedback everyone. The nordic ones look good :)

I think I am going to get one. (I've been looking in the paper and gumtree) and "sale offers" online (would prefer one with a guarantee tbh).

I am really in the zone at the moment, been doing workout DVD every day, on strict calorie controlled diet. But feel need something more than just walking the dog & workout DVD.

I'm too shy to go to the gym.
