Chicken-Friendly Plants

Recommended Posts

My cube and chooks are due to arrive at the start of July, giving me plenty of time to get the garden ready for them.

I was planning to set aside a part of my garden for chicken-friendly plants. Any suggestions?

I have read that garlic (powder or cloves in the drinker) is beneficial to hens. Does anyone know if wild garlic (Allium ursinum) has similar therapeutic properties?

We had loads of wild garlic at the bottom of the garden which the chooks scoffed, we then had a run of garlic flavoured eggs, which wasn't unpleasant, but did mean we could only use them for savoury things - Garlic flavoured cake anyone?

Are you looking for plants they enjoy eating, or plants that they will leave alone and look good in your garden??

I know our's like to eat chives - I've had to put some netting around the pot!!!

I would be interested in creating a chicken-friendly kitchen garden full of tasty morsels for the chooks to enjoy. Not sure how doable that would be long-term...

They will eat most things - and not just take a morsel... It won't take long for them to raise things to the ground... Weeks if not days, depending on the size of your garden and how long they are out free ranging!

No point buying bedding plants anymore - 2 chickens can eat a tray of pansies in minutes!! The challenge has definitely been finding plants that they dont eat...
