Wooden Coop Size

Recommended Posts

Those with wooden coops, how big is it and how many birds do you have in it?

I spotted this on ebay, not too sure it could hold 8-12 birds (maybe bantams), but has got me thinking  .

I have 2 hens in mine (used to have 4) which is a converted one of these and they have masses of room. We're getting a few more, I was thinking of adding 2, because I don't want them really cramped, but now am wondering if I could get 1 or 2 more in .

They have a big WIR (need to build a new one) and free-range quite a bit of the time, at least a few times a week.

Thanks :D

If you coop is the same size as the one in your link from Focus then I think you could fit a few more in easily I had five chickens in a wooden house 90cmx90cmx90cm (plus pitched roof) and they had quite a bit of space, I also have four that sleep in one Eglu with the door open and if you look through the door you can't see a single hen they are that piled up on the right

 I have images of chickens giving each other piggy backs in the eglu!

It is that one from Focus. I built them a nest box and stuck a perch across the back.

I think when we move it to the new WIR, I'll creosote it all and put in a new perch.

The eglu is 80x80, so I think I will fit more than 4 in.

Fingers crossed we hatch a quite few girls then

Amongst others, I've got this coop http://www.elbec4gardenbuildings.co.uk/index.aspx?section=product&deptid=355&productid=1787 and it's got 10 hybrids and 10 growers sleeping in it at the moment. Before the growers went in my lot slept on top of each other in the nest boxes and on the first two perches so basically two thirds of the inside was vacant  The growers will soon half in numbers and I'll eventually put some of the chicks that are about to hatch in it when they're older plus the three ex-bats I'm adopting. I've been looking at wooden coops again because I'll need another one soon but I'm coming to the conclusion I'd be better off buying a shed and converting it. The price of many of these coops is ridiculous, so many are poorly made or designed. I'm not happy with any of the ones I've got, they've all got things I don't like about them. I need a coop for some Orps & Brahmas and I think a shed is the way to go.

I think converted sheds are better than wooden coops.

I've discovered "Brilley Blues", which are kind of like a pure breed hybrid  - They're hybrids which breed true and always lay blue eggs. They look a bit like bluebelles to me :D

So 6 Crested Cream Legbar and 6 Brilley Blues are hopefully going into the incubator soon. Lets hope for plenty of girls. :D

Theres a few of us that want them, and have homes for the boys.

What a pretty bird!

You're only really restricted by the size of the run and by how much time they get to free range. As the others have said - they like to squash up at night, so don't really need lots of space in the housing. If you cover the run, then they have somewhere light to go to when the weather is bad and aren't using the house for shelter.

We got a bit carried away on my first coop , it's 5ft by 21/2 ft wide by 3ft high sloping to 21/2 ft, that's for 6 birds and there is loads of room , could probably get another 2 or 3 in with room to spare.

My new coop I was a little more restrained  it's ONLY 4ft long  , same height and length , for 7 birds ( though one is a tiny silkie) still plenty of room for them all.
