Raina
Hi all, Hopefully we are moving to Llandudno (North Wales) in a couple of months, and we are thinking of getting a few Ex-batts. But what i was thinking, would we be better off Getting a Cube or 1 - maybe 2 Eglus? also What are the Up & Downsides of the Cube? Oh and any pics of would be great Thanks in advance, Raina
Janty
If I had to choose between the cube and eglu, it would have to be the cube. These are some photos of our current set up. This will be changing in a weeks time when the walk in run is built.
Hen Watch
Oooohhhh..... that's a hard question. If money was no object I would have bought a cube. But I could only afford the eglu so I bought that. However......... now I have the eglu with 4 hens, not often, but every now and again they make an absolute racket and I am glad I have an eglu so I am not tempted to get more than 4 hens.... twisted logic I know but logic all the same. I love my as I have a fenced off area they free range in and the eglu is nice and u"Ooops, word censored!"strusive. And I'm sure that you know the benefits of the eglu already anyway. Not much help am I !!!!!! Whatever you decide will be good.
Ain't Nobody Here
How about an eglu and a walk in run . Then you can add another eglu if you need to . Congratulations on the move, btw .
Falkor
I started with an Eglu set up..... and now have a cube with WIR set up.... Of the two I prefer my current Cube set up. Don`t get me wrong....I love the eglu, it is such a great design but the cube is much more practical and obviously provides more space for the chickens. Also.....the eglu and standard run actually took up MORE garden than my cube and WIR. The cube is higher up and therefore I think that is is easier to clean ( I think it stays cleaner than the eglu somehow). When I had my girls in the eglu they slept and pooped in the nestbox but they don`t in the cube, maybe because it is sectioned off? I also find it easier to "get at" my girls when they are roosting in the cube as the roof slides forward and the whole back comes off.....which is ideal when they need a once over or dusting with diatom etc. My only critisim of the cube is that you need access to both sides......one side has the egg port and the other the door handle which needs to be pulled out a fair way. This is not much of a problem for me (just had to cut down a 25ft conifer) but if space is an issue then it needs to be considered. Not sure if any of my rambings help
Ygerna
I had an Eglu, then two Eglus, and now they have gone and been replaced with a Cube. I LOVE the Cube. I really liked the Eglu but for me, the cube is better as it takes up less space than two Eglus, and I have 8 chickens, not 6 now. Down side of the cube is that cleaning the run area is awkward, not impossible just not as easy as it could be. I am now getting a WIR ( ) so this will no longer be an issue for me. Chicken keeping can be addictive, if you think you will want more than three hens it may be worth considering the cube straight off, rather than trying the eglu first. poachedegg
I have had both, and prefer the cube, for both ease, space and I actually prefer the look of it in our garden too.
Ygerna
Hey poachedegg. I have the same, er, roosting bars in my cube run too I took one level and hung it from the roof with bungees though, so the girls can get higher.
chelsea
Eglu every time for me. The cube has it uses (roosts more chickens) but it is huge & cumbersome to move.
ubereglu
I prefer the eglu, it just seems more self contained and is relatively easy to move when I clean out the run and you don't really need access to both sides, just as long as there's room to pull out the bar when you're lifting the lid off and the nesting area is more private for them than the cube too, as they get their own little space rather than nesting together. lisa33
I prefer my cube but Andyman prefers the Eglu.
wiblick
if I had to do it again I would have gone for a cube rather than 2 eglus. If only because there is a real chance of all the hens trying to pile into one eglu at bedtime. If the cube is the only choice they can't get these insane 'preferences' into their heads! littleleicesterfox
I like my cube but I haven't really tried the eglu to be honest. I felt it took up less space but still providing enough chicken space for more chickens so was better value iyswim!

Not quite sure what you mean - am I right in thinking you took the top off the rack and dangled it from the roof - does it support them ok? Have you got a photo of it?
