Birthday Parties (again)

Recommended Posts

:shock::shock:

We just go out for the day, Oliver's 2nd b.day was to a local farm. Then my parents come round for fish and chips and birthday cake. As they get older I don't mind have a couple of friends round to play and some party food, but I'm not getting into the huge birthday party thing. I hate it when my 4yr old gets party invites, where they've obviously invited the whole class, and he doesn't even know or play with the child.

It is all relative isn't it? We're spending nearly £300 on my 4yo's party next month and I think that's too much! Sadly we're in London and it's what a pretty normal party in a church hall costs.

My H just said he'd far rather set our girls up with a house/flat than blow that on a party, but those who can afford to spend £500k on a party can also afford the house/car etc.!

DD (7) went to a boys (8) party yesterday at his house. They decorated massive muffins wearing aprons, chef's hat and a fake tash and made cheesy mice (?) - it ended with a pinata for the party bag.....DD said house parties are much more fun than going to activity centres as you actually get to speak and play with more of the other children! :D

What I don't like is the party bags - they're normally full of rubbish that ends up in the bin but the worst of them is the expectation from children that they're getting one! Gone are the days when kids went home with a piece of cake, a balloon and anything they were lucky enough to win!

I haven't been brave enough not to do the party bags on my kids' parties but I haven't done bags, I've bought books instead - Usborne do some super deals periodically where you can buy a number of books of a series and they work out at less than £1 each... bargain :D
