Ain't Nobody Here
For some reason today, I was thinking about the word "disappointed" and wondered why the opposite of it isn't "appointed" . If the opposite is "pleased" why don't we just used "displeased"? If it's satisfied, why not "dissatisfied"? All of these other "dis" words seem to follow a rule - disability; disaffirm; disbelief; discontent; dishearten; dislike; disown. Just ignore me . I sometimes go off on these language ramblings . Happy chickens!
....and why does flammable mean the same as inflammable - they should be opposites!!
Space Chick
I love these language issues! I'm learning Spanish, and you start to realise even more how weird the English language is when you start learning another language. For example the way we pronounce words, the letters can change their sound willy nilly. Heres an alternate spelling for the word FISH........... GHOTI GH as in Laugh F O as in women I TI as in station SH Complete Madness!
PapaJuliet
I occasionally use "mantled" to mean the opposite of "dismantled"... but then again, I am wierd. Other than that, displeased and dissatisfied are proper words. They may not be quite so common as the others, though. PJ

Martin B
WOW! What a fantastic thread. I love the English Language and all the complications of it, partly the reason I am studying it. GHOTI is good. It's an example my teacher used when we doing pronounciation and accents etc.
