Posted June 10, 2009 Share Posted June 10, 2009 Because I like swimming outdoors, and because various people are uncomfortable with the idea of there being a huge body of open water and the thought that some people might like to use that rather than sit on a tiny bit of sand turning red with sunburn and then get out and dry off and change and they will see human lady flesh (shocking, I know! ), I have invented... THE MEGATOWEL! You will need four standard-sized bath towels, one hand towel, a metre of matching ribbon and needle and thread. Start by sewing two of the towels together lengthways. Sew the other two towels together lengthways, but leave about 20cm unsewn at one end. This unsewn bit will be the 'collar' or 'neck' bit on the front. You should now have two half-megatowels. Sew these together along one of the shorter sides, leaving about 30cm unsewn in the middle, at the 'neck' area. You should now have a sort of mega-massive megatowel poncho. Stick it over your head for fit and tweak your neck and head gaps accordingly. Then sew half a metre of ribbon at about mid-thigh height on the outer sides of the BACK bit of draping fabric. This will allow you to tie your megatowel into a robe, and then 'flop' the front over it to give you a nice, flappy amount of arm room, while staying snugly fully robed. Then take the handtowel, and sew it, long side, across the middle of the top of the seam joining the back towels together. You can then plop this over your head, cowl hood style. Very massive and very warm. So you can use it as a beach blanket, or a changing tent thingy. THE MEGATOWEL!!! Couperwife Posted June 28, 2009 Share Posted June 28, 2009 Because I like swimming outdoors, this has got me thinking we live right next to the north sea (literally 5 minutes walk away ) and I would love to swim in the sea, what do you wear? do you have a normally cossie, or do you wear a wetsuit? Get one with a high neck and back - the more flesh covered, the warmer you are. If it's just normal chilly and you want some extra moral support clothing, a rash vest (google it - it's a thin stretchy vest) is good. I love mine because I burn quickly so it stops that from happening too. And get some sea shoes - neoprene wetsuity shoes - great for pebble beaches - and a thick swimming hat. Covering your extremities keeps heat in. Aside from that, a 3mm neoprene full length wetsuit will keep the cold very much at bay from spring til mid autumn. They start at around £65. A shorty wetsuit starts at around £40. I feel the cold most in my arms and torso, so I like the longer sleeves on a full length wetsuit. Valkyrie Posted July 12, 2009 Share Posted July 12, 2009 It looks so much more than a towel. When I used to swim in the sea a lot, mum bought towelling fabric and made a big tube. At one end she added roping so that it could be gathered. It slipped over your head so that you could take the cossie off, dry yourself and gradually work your way down and ta da - privacy on a busy beach. My dad's eyes did pop out of his head when my brother was rummaging around under his and said "I've lost it!".
