Holly, Ivy and Daisy Kelloggs new home

Recommended Posts

Just thought you might like to see the wonderful new run we have built for our pullets. They are just 9.5 weeks old although my 2 hybrids GNRGNR are so huge i find it hard to believe.

Hubby and i made it over the last couple of months, he is a genius with his hands and i think has done a great job. We even managed to fit the (green eglu) into the end of the run rather than put it inside and lose space.

Now i have plenty of room in case i want to increase my flock in the future.

Does the Eglu just pull backwards to remove it from the run, or does the wood surround slide upwards first, and then you extract the Eglu? In any case, an excellent run, and wonderfully designed.

Someone was only asking yesterday how best to attach an Eglu to the outside of a WIR - I think you have the answer!

Where are you going to attach the second Eglu when you expand the flock :lol:.

Hi Andrew,

You are right on both counts. You remove one of the wooden arches and then the eglu just comes out for cleaning purposes. Well spotted.

As for the second flock i think we'll wait and see for now :notalk:

It looks really good! :D

I like the bricks too, it looks better than a wood skirt and probably more effective :)

And how yellow are Daisy's legs! :o

Talking of Daisy's legs, i have no idea what breed he is as it was one of the eggs we hatched and it was unmarked. If anyone can recognise it i would be really grateful. I thought it was going to be a gold laced wyandotte and it does have some reddy brown feathers coming through under all the black but a definite confirmation would be good.

thanks

Gill

oooh what lucky girls.

three quick questions,

1) do they have any free range time

2) how big is the run

3) are you using aubiose, if so, how are you getting on with it?

Lydia

Hi Lydia,

To answer your questions:

1) Yes they come out each day for a nice run and to stretch their wings

2) The run is 5ft x 12ft x 6ft at highest point of roof

3) I am using mascanthus is it called? elephant grass anyway. I would like to use the other bedding but cant seem to source it around here.

Thank you all for your lovely comments. Yes, hubby is very good with wood and considering that back in February he wouldnt even consider letting us have chickens let alone build a run for them i think we have come a long way. Now it is him who cant wait to let them range free. It was him, lucky devil that got the first lap cuddle from Daisy. They are still really nervous of us yet, despite the fact that they have been handled since they were tiny. But once out roaming they do come up to us if one of the cats comes near.
