4m x 3m Omlet pen, cube, new auto door still boxed and coop light

I wonder if anyone has any advice.

 

Our once top chicken, Blossom, has been unwell on and off for a few weeks now. She was given antibiotics and wormed about 5 or 6 weeks ago when she first went off colour.

 

The problem seems to be with her egg laying equipment. In the last few weeks, we've had the range of odd eggs - softies, lashes, strange shapes, yolkless, tiny ones. You name it, she's produced it. When she's in the midst of needing to pass these blips, she seems very lacklustre, no appetite etc... then she'll perk up for a bit.

 

It doesn't seem to be getting any better and I'm starting to wonder if it isn't a little cruel to keep her like this - she deosn't have much quality of life.

Sorry to hear that.

 

Thats a hard call for other people to make and only you know best.

 

My feelings are if an animal is in pain/discomfort that you cannot take away and no quality of life then I would take them to the vets to be PTS.

Just curious - what does a hen go through when they have the henopause - could this be it and is it something that passes and how long is too long?

 

I'm all for quality of life, but could this be something they go through as their equipment slowly stops working and then they just stop laying.

I'm sorry to hear about poor Blossom - have you discussed the situation with your vet? He or she may be able to help you come to a decision. The paramount concern must be Blossom's welfare, and you know her better than anyone, but I would certainly ask for the vet's opinion.

Hens certainly are prone to problems with their egg tackle as they near the end of their laying career, but it could be due to any number of factors and I'd suggest that you take her to the vet.

I agree...it sounds as if she needs to see the vet again.
