Friend sadly lost their chicken....need some advice plz

Recommended Posts

My friend decided to get some chickens of his own after being smitten with mine.

He built his own coop and purchased 3 lovely pols from a local farm

One of the girls after a few days seemed to be sneezing and slightly snotty

so I said it could be an allergy to the new coop, bedding etc or something else

I told him to monitor her for a few days...

She seemed to improve but was still a little runny around the beak, so then I checked on here and people suggested citricidal...

I told him to try that for a few more days, but if she got worse take her to the vets...

(but he didnt try it :( )

I didnt hear anything until today when he called to say that she was very rattly and lethargic at weekend and this morning was laying down looking very ill.

So I popped over to check on her and unfortunatly she was taking her last breaths

Im so upset poor thing...Ive made an appointment at the vets for the other 2 tomorrow and told him Im taking them to get checked out, as I heard another one sneeze while I was there.

I asked about disposal of the other girl and they said it was £32!!!

Im disgusted with the price...and wondered if anyone has any other suggestions??

It will be £35 consultation fee tomorrow to see the girls + any prescriptions etc

Im just about to go over and out the girl in a bag and take the cat box for the other 2 tomorrow. I will also use some stalosan F in the run. anything else I need to do or get him to do?

Thank you

Kim

When I took Stella, my buff Orps to the vet for them to dispose of I was charged £7.23. £32 seems an awful lot of money to dispose of a chicken....I would be asking them for a breakdown of what that covers!

If your friend hadn`t had the chooks long I would be contacting the seller to see if they are aware of any problems with that batch and poss seeing about a replacment. They might be able to take the dead chook back to arrange for disposal as I am sure it is something that they deal with fairly often.

You sould like you are doing all the right things. I would give everything a good going over with disinfectant, or tell you friend to....drinkers, feeders, coop etc at least then he will know he has done what he can to prevent the others catching it if it is catchin and they are still clear

Thank you for the replies! everyone is always so helpful on here.

I have been over and stalosan f'd the whole run, coop.

I cant get into his house so told him to clean all the food, drink stuff when he gets back.

He phoned the farm and told them about the chook.

They have said they havent had any others reported to them, but if he wants to come and get another one (hopefully free)

I told him to ask about taking the dead one and dipsosing of it for him.

He has got the morning off work, so Ive offered to come to vets anyway with him and possibly take him to the farm to get that sorted too.

Not the greatest start to chicken keeping, but hopefully its the end of this problem now

and I can get back to sorting everything out for my egg hatching at the weekend!! (hatch)

Cheers everyone!!
