loopy
Hi. My sausages has a very infected and sore vent. It started last Thusday when we got home and discovered that she had bled quite badly from her vent. We took her straight to the vet who washed her crop out (!?) then said to keep an eye on her, one of the other chicks must have pecked her. Took her back the next day, and got a useful vet who poked around her vent (literally!) said that she was inflamed and sore, and gave her an antibiotic injection to try and stop any infection (Poo and blood don;t mix too well.) Over the weekend she was great back to her old self. THen on Monday got home to discover that her vent is a mess again. The whole thing looks swollen, and teh top flap looks disfigured and black, almost as if it is rotting. She is weeping constantly and because of the swelling her vent is not closed properly so all bodily fluids are just seeping out and down the back of her legs. She has been back to the vet who says she has a temp to boot, and we have her on a course of antibiotics to administer am and pm orally. From the front, and behaviour wise she is fine. She is eating and drinking (lots of drinking!) but her vent looks horrendous. She won;t let me clean it, and to be honest, I don;t want to touch it and make things worse. I'm just wondering if anyone has had anything like this happen to their chucks, and if they knew a reason for the cause of this, and possibly some miricle cure?? any thing would be useful many thanks loopy
Egluntyne
Sounds as if she has had a prolapse which the others have pecked at whilst it was out. I think if she was mine, I would treat her as if she had a prolapse, and keep her separate, in the dark and on a maintenance diet only for 2 or three days to give her insides a chance to heal. Another thought. Any sign of maggots?
The Dogmother
I agree; she really needs separating if you haven't already done so. Try to bathe her nethers if you can at all and then see what the damage is. Purple spray or a squirt of vet wound powder would be good too. loopy
hi. Having to start a new thread as my internet won't let me pot a reply for some reason. I put up a postng about my Sausages and her vent problems, loosing blood and generally being unwell and her various trips to the vet. Thanks to those who replied with advice about possible prolapse. I tried to add to my original thread, but no joy! Hope you find my thanks on this thread! Edited: I've merged these two together for you, loopy Think it is a prolapse she suffered, and now, three weekes later, she's still going - though not 100% Vet has suggested that there may be muscle damage, so she may be incontinent, which she seems to be. She has her own coop and run now as the others can't help themsleves around her bum, but they freerange a lot toghther, and I keep an eye on things to stop any bum pecking. She does seem to be heeling very slowly, so it's worth it. The problem I have now is that although she can poo, she is constantly wetting herslef, so her bare bum (feathers moulted and over preened) is caked in a white crust, and she is always damp on her undersides and between her legs. She has started to loose feathers on her belly and legs as she is always over cleaning herslef ( can't blame her!) Each night I mop her with a cloth as best as I can, and I bath her on warm days a couple of times a week to try to get the worst off. Her skin underneigth looks quite red and sore - almost like nappy rash - I guess becasue she is constantly damp. Any reccommendations for a cream I could put on the skin to sooth it, or help protect it? thanks again for any advice. Desperate to try to keep her going and she seems happy in herself, and I love her to bits! Loops x
Ain't Nobody Here
Poor little thing . I think I read recently about someone using Sudocrem on sore bits (appropriate as you mentioned nappy rash ). That might soothe it .
Egluntyne
Johnson's Tee Tree cream is excellent. **Click**
Plum
One of mine has been similarly white on feathers and sore around vent, I found using aloe vera purple spray helped and I put vaseline sparingly on the skin.
The Dogmother
Has your vet checked whether she has Vent Gleet? It's a herpes type viral infection that causes a nasty scabby looking vent.
