excellent choice! :D

Our pekin chicks are far tamer and more confident than any of the others already. There is a real difference even though all the chicks are handled the same amount each day :D

Actually....strike that as it's not strictly true anymore!

The pekins fly onto our our hands or shoulders voluntarily so now get cuddled rather more than the others

Have just snuck out between showers and turfed Kentucky off the nest for a comfort break.

Whilst her back was turned I swapped the eggs.

She didn't notice at all and is sitting with that glassy eyed expression that only a broody has.

Nor can she count as I removed 4 eggs and replaced them with 6.

Will leave her be now till tomorrow and hope for the best.

As you might remember our broody took to the four chicks we popped under her in the dead of night without any problems. It was when the remaining eggs disappeared and four more chicks suddenly arrived the next afternoon that she was left looking totally mystified for several minutes . All worked out well in the end though, three weeks on and the chicks are growing up fast.

Pekin eggs due to hatch tomorrowish.

I have deliberately not interfered in any way. No candling, no touching at all. Even managed to avoid it when tidying the nestbox when Kentucky went for her comfort break.

She has certainly been turning them. The interesting thing is that the eggs have remained in the same position in relation to each other throughout.

Yay! Pekins are wonderful, full of character and they remind me of grumpy small dogs who start fights with big dogs. No fear!

Are bantam chicks smaller than normal LF chicks when they hatch?

Not sure if this gives a good idea of their size (somehow it's hard to capture how tiny they are on camera) but this is one of my day old pekins on his/her way to the brooder (grumpy face. Feel the wrath - oh noes!) :D I thought that they were at least half the size of LF chicks the same age.

Soes anyone have more pekin chick photos? They're so adorable.

Good luck with broody and eggs. So exciting!!! Maybe your broody took the extra two as miraculous eggception. *groans at own joke*

Oh yes, lots, see here for a slideshow from day 1. The most recent photos aren't there yet (reminder to self to update the slideshow ), but if you take a look at this thread, there's pictures of the boys and girls at 5 weeks.

They are now seven weeks, and this weekend we've had general free ranging by all concerned, and pretty successful integration with our grumpy old girl, Fifi. A few pecks and squeaks and a fair bit of flapping and posturing between the three big girls, but by 4:00pm this afternoon they were all within 5 feet of each other and no nasty exchanges, so I think it went really well.

I was keeping such a close watch that I didn't dare pop into the house for the camera in case all hell broke loose, so sadly I don't have photo's of the weekends activities, but will try to get some during the week.
