martinw
The lovely Darren from Omlet delivered our eglu and girls on Thursday last week, and what a joy they have been! Ethel our Gingernut has been laying since day one and hasn't let us down yet. Maude our Pepperpot on the other hand, laid her first egg today, and what a beauty! It is tiny but perfectly formed and a gorgeous darker brown colour than Ethels. Do the eggs get bigger with time? I hope so, I'm going to need about ten of these to make a decent omlette! Anyway here are the girls. My daughter, India, who I only see at the weekends, absolutely adores them, though I've had to stop her feeding them too many treats! The girls are so friendly and don't mind being picked up at all, even by an over excited three year old... We are looking forward to many more eggs and giggles with the new members of our ever increasing family (Cats, budgies, rabbit, worms, and a hamster) Thanks Omlet team! The eggs do get bigger with time - or at least ours did! Won't be long before you will have double yolkers and giving eggs away to friends!! The eggs do get bigger with time - or at least ours did! Won't be long before you will have double yolkers and giving eggs away to friends!! I really hope so! I waited three days (3!) before trying the first eggs, so I had a decent amount to make scrambled eggs, and they taste so much better than anything I've ever had from the supermarket. Num num num Maybe I need to start thinking about quality over quantity...
Griffin
You might be lucky enough to get some double yolkers too, young ones tend to produce those. Well done, they're great and your daughter will love them! My chickens are brilliant with my daughters. My youngest is three too.

Well done, they're great and your daughter will love them! My chickens are brilliant with my daughters. My youngest is three too. My Daughter India can't wait to come round and see the girls now, I try to make every day I spend with her as special as possible, even if that means I now have a house full of animals for her to play with! Feel I've got to make every second count as I don't get to see her as often as I'd like. I was a bit worried to start with that they might peck her and she'd be scared, but none of that, they follow her about and she isn't scared at all. Ethel is now apparently 'her best friend'. martinw
Is it usual that Ethel would feel a bit down after laying her first egg this morning and having it taken from her? She is making some weird almost crying noises and is looking at me with an unusual disdain. She wouldn't even eat a dried mealworm. I think she's got the hump with me.... She keeps sitting in the coop on the nesting box. Broody after her first egg?

Henhathnofury
I have a speckled sussex who does not like having her egg taken away...she squawks! This reminds me of when I started..with one gingernut ranger and a pepperpot. Two years ago. Your gingernut is a lot deeper ginger than mine. Your pepperpot's eggs will get bigger..my girl laid eye-watering ones. Spookily, I also have daughter called India, who is twelve. If you have a black cat called Betty..then we would have the full set!
martinw
If you have a black cat called Betty..then we would have the full set! I have a cat who is very black, but unfortunately he is called 'Monkey', due to a his kittenlike tendency of climbing curtains and sitting on the pole. He loves the new birds. Ethel doesn't like me today, just got a peck. Tut, I feel guilty, it was her first. Damn tasty tho.
bexbex
I have a black rabbit called Betty You can't have her though, she's my baby lol
Henhathnofury
Lovely names: Monkey the cat, Betty the rabbit..... I call my daughter India my little monkey. Maybe we should also name the frogs we keep finding all over the house..they have come in via the cellar. I raised them all from tadpoles last year. This year I raised hundreds to frogdom.....so next year we may be plagued by big frogs! I would love a rabbit but how do chickens and rabbits get on? If at all! bexbex
I love the name India They have their seperate hutches but they're fine together. Ignor each other all day free ranging but the rabbits do like to try and steal the chicken food so have to watch for that lol My rabbits also like the evening corn more then the chickens. sure it won't do them any harm though. If you get a rabbit get a rex rabbit, mine is an total baby. Will follow you all day long and loves cuddles, where as the others don't like to be touched. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=3152943&l=d8d760ebc3&id=785429851 Becki x
