Worst Veggie Christmas?

Recommended Posts

I stopped attending Christmas 'Do's' because of the poor offerings for vegetarians. i was so fed-up with having to pay the same as people who ordered half a duck of big slabs of turkey but only being offered a pasta dish or - on one occasion - being asked what I'd like and the chef would cook it

Quite often it is a case of "how any vegetables would you like with your vegetables?"

The worst meal I had was flabby pasta with heated up, frozen mixed veg and was offered roast veg to go with it but no-one could tell me whether the veg had meat juices on them  All for something like £16.95

I can't be the only one who is disillusioned? - any more horror stories?

PS - what I would like is something like a piece of Nutroast to have with all the normal, seasonal veg. Unfortunately, Nutroast gained a bit of a joke reputation and now, no-one cooks it :(

Its not just you. Im also fed up with sub-standard meals!!

For a start whenever we attend a "function" im always deemed difficult as I fall into the minority of vegetarians.

on occasions too many to mention I have eaten truly awful veggie meals.

Can remember attending a retirement dinner a while back (I think there were 2 veggies there) and while everyone else was tucking into their roast beef with all the trimmings we had some watery, disgusting soupy type thing (it wasnt meant to be a soup).

Hubby felt sorry for me and the table I sat on all saved a bit of the ....yes you've guessed it....vegetables to eat as I was so starving

went out for a meal the other night and I had "vegetable tart" £8.95! (very bland) that came with steamed vegetables (again, bland).

I know I like vegetables - but a bit of decent seasoning/garlic/cheesey stuff wouldnt go a miss. Or more pasta/rice dishes on menu's would help our choice.

I just look out my old magazines to look through - and of course, I eat meat now at home (and only our own home grown meat)

I find the magazines can be as bad sometimes and put all sorts of weird and wonderful recipes in when i just like an alternative to the meat element of a meal.

Must say i refuse to go to expensive Christmas Dos because of the poor food which is always on offer. :( And you can bet your life the roast veg has been cooked with the meat & there is no vegy gravy either

I work with quite an eclectic bunch of folks at work so a posh do where you get dolled up to the nines is just not appropriate, so we go Bowling & then for a Balti & a beer 8) - this works really well as the curry houses in Birmingham are second to none & the vegy food is delicious! :D:D

Christmas do's for veggies are usually a disappointment in my experience - but I go expecting to be disappointed - so I'm not too disappointed - it's usually been that horrid generic vegetable lasagne that all pubs serve - it's made of cardboard and wallpaper paste and served in a rabbit dish...

at home for many years we have kept one dish that we only eat at Christmas - it's coming up for 18 years now - that's Cashew-nut Parsnip and Mushroom layer - it's wonderful.

we have turkey too for parents and guests - and, of course, everyone wants to try ours - which is a bit annoying - because it runs out so fast!!

Although not a veggie myself (like my food too much and have seen some of the offerings.... :( ), I made one for a friend that was totally delicious:

cous cous with feta, topped with roast veggies, topped with green salad and drizzled with a harissa (I think) dressing. Can look up the exact combo if anyone wants it - it was :drool::drool:

I'm going to a christmas Do this year where the vegetarian choice is cashew nut stroganof - not sure what this will look/be like :? still it's with a big group of my friends so will be a great partee no matter what the food is like - however, I will not be going to the works xmas do because the choice there was something very bland (so bland sounding that I can't even remember) and I have no confidence that my work colleagues will lift the occassion sufficiently to negate the poor food.

I'm going to another party where we are having nut-roast which is great cos basically I'll feel like I'm having a traditional xmas dinner. :D
