What breed is this?

Recommended Posts

My husband and I found a chicken on our walk this morning with the dogs, but we have no idea what it is. It looks like an expensive breed although when we rescued it, it was in a bit of a mess, hiding in bushes.

Can you help us identify the breed in order for us to help it more please? At the moment we are unsure whether it is male or female.

It has fluffy white plumage, strawberry comb coloured brown, red, blackish (like a scab). The wattle is the same colour but has blue and white parts on the side.

It looks like it has a spur/claw (1/2 inch) coming out the back of its legs.

It is larger than a Bantam, although it could be young.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi

Thanks to those that replied. We have decided that it is a Silkie, probably male. :?

I will take him to the vets tomorrow to get him checked over. Then not too sure what to do with him. We'd love to keep him but I don't know how he'd fit in with our two girls and whether the neighbours would put up with the noise (not that he's that noisy at the moment). Looks like he'll have to come indoors tonight as we haven't got a proper home for him (large cardboard box at the moment, sitting under an umbrella in case it rains!).

Sorry I couldn't work out how to put in a photo and as I'm working on employer's PC cannot download any programs.

I will post an update to let you all know the outcome.

UPDATE

Just to let you all know that the Silkie went to an animal rescue centre yesterday, where they have named him Snowy and are giving him his own large run with house and 2 females - can't be bad! Checked the place over - looks really clean and safe.

We were sorry to see him go, but the cockle doodle dooing at 5am wouldn't go down too well with the neighbours.
