Pekins

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm hoping to get some pekins really soon

Now i have a couple of Questions

What's the average price of a Pekin.

About what age can they go broody.

and would they be safe to go in with my girls GNRGNR (after intro's) or would they get picked on being small?

and is there any special care they need?

Thanks,

Raina :D

What's the average price of a Pekin. It depends on how old the bird is. Chicks are usually around £5 each, but grown hens will be a lot more.

About what age can they go broody. At any time once they reach maturity. Pekins are known to go broody, so be prepared for that eventuality.

Would they be safe to go in with my girls (after intro's) or would they get picked on being small? My seven Pekins are now in with my two big girls, but they have been in sight of each other since day 1, so that helps. Even so, the big girls do have a go at the Pekins every now and again, especially if they have all been in the WIR all day without any free-ranging time.

Is there any special care they need? No, treat them like any other chicken. There's a series of pictures of my little Pekins growing up here. They are now just over 10 week old.

Hope this helps

Lovely Pekin pics. Looks like you have quite a few cockerals!
Thank you! We started with eight chicks, we lost one after a few days, but the seven remaining chicks are all doing very well. Of the seven, three are girls, one is a male frizzle and three are regular gold partridge peking cockerels. We're keeping the Frizzle, but the other three boys will all be found good homes in the coming weeks.

We've currently got one pekin - had two but sadly one disappeared - so Maud's it now! And I'm desperate to get some more. Maud has no problems holding her own with the two GNRGNR - if anything she's in charge! Certainly neither of them dare go near the nesting box when she's in there! And she takes on cats given the chance too

I only paid £15 for Maud - she was about 40 weeks old when I got her so already laying. We only paid £5 for Dulcie but she had a gammy leg. I really love the Pekins though - they're so cute and have such personality.

Andrew, your photos are stunning :!: Your chicks are soooooooooo lovely. Well done. A&H
Thank you. They have been a joy since day 1. I'll keep updating the photo's over the coming weeks. The boys will be off to new homes quite soon, with the exception of the black Frizzle, who we are keeping.

I paid £15 for a 10 week old pekin.

£30 for both my girls...we've had them for a year in 4 days and one is broody right now...last time she was broody it was for 9 weeks when she must have been 7-8 months old. The other one has only been broody once though, for 3 weeks when she was 5 months.

Hope this helps.
