I'm afraid that I agree with your Mum on this one.

If your Mum is the one paying for the coop and chickens I can completely understand the fact that she finds the price a bit

Why don't you start with a wooden coop, (doesn't have to be a cheap and nasty one-there are some lovely looking, great quality wooden houses :D ) and you could try saving up for a cube??

Maybe meet your Mum half way and ask her if she would go half with you on the Cube.

If one of my children wanted a cube and saved for months (or probably years  ) to get half of the money together, I would more than likely to want to put in the other half as they have then shown how responsible and serious they really are.

Also-in my opinion, you are VERY lucky that your Mum is agreeing to let you have chickens. :D Are you more excited about having the hens or the house in which they will live in?

Good luck anyway and I hope that you enjoy your new pets when you get them.

If you do end up with a wooden house-still feel free to chat on the forum (of course) and don't forget to post lots of pics

If your mother is prepared to buy a wooden house and chickens that is cool, as you can get your chickens.

If you are determined that you want a cube, why don't you ask if it can be your Christmas present. If you didn't have anything else, and maybe some other family chipped in for it you maybe could have it. Just a thought :D

This probably isn't what you want to hear but here it is anyway. I think if you really want a cube then you would be willing to help your mum pay something towards it as it is alot of money. If having chickens is more important then I would have a cheaper wooden house now and prove to your mum that you can look after them and maybe get a cube at a later date when there is more money available. Anyway, good luck with your decision. I hope you enjoy your chickens as much as I do when you do get them. :D:D:D

I know you're excited about getting chickens (we can tell, you know  ) but have a think about how many chickens you actually want to get :) . Starting off with 3 is a very sensible idea and an eglu is ideal for that. I have a "second-hand" eglu and you couldn't tell it had been used - I got it from Omlet as "reconditioned" and it was about £40 less than the full price. They clean up really well, especially with a power washer, so I really don't think you'd be disappointed with one from Omlet, Ebay or from someone on the forum :) .

If you find that you really love chicken keeping and can prove to your mum that you're going to be totally responsible for them, you could work on her to upgrade to a cube  .

Keep an eye on this thread for eglus for sale :) .

Good luck :D .

All of my omlets are pre-loved; (blue eglu)(cube lilac)(cube orange)(pink eglu) and my (green eglu) which has gone on to be loved elsewhere again.......there really is no shame or horror to recycling a perfectly good second hand eglu or cube and the cost, if you are careful, is usually less than brand new.

I agree with the save up & go halves route to owning a cube................if you start with a wooden house you can do the saving whilst enjoying your chooks.......

I find if my children come in all guns blazing, I (and especially their father :anxious: ) are much less likely to agree....we prefer the "I have thought about this and am prepared to help fund it this way..." train of thought.........sorry you didn't want to hear that did you .......... there are so many other "how good is the eglu/cube" kind of threads, you won't have to look far to find them.

Good luck in your quest though,

Sha x

I have two new cubes and one second hand cube. Two of my eglus have also been second hand...they scrub up as new so don't worry. New ones also look second hand once they've been poo'd over for a week.

:D

How old are you?

Sorry for asking but if a cube is so important (and I'm not knocking that one) are you in a position to get a job to help pay for it? Maybe you could delay getting chickens until next Spring and have an eglu fund over the Winter. It took us years to finally decide to get chickens and now look what's happened. A few more months won't kill you...promise.

How many chickens are you thinking of keeping and in how big an area? If you only really have room for four of five then I'd go for an eglu, as it's cheaper and just as good.

We started off with a wooden coop which we built ourselves, and it's not horrible at all, it's just not so manoeuvrable or as easy to clean. I can see her point, as it is a lot of money to spend, especially if you suddenly decide you don't want to keep chickens anymore after 6 months-think my parents were worried about this as I was about 12 at the time.

If you have to get a wooden coop then make sure that it has proper weldmesh used for the run, doesn't have a felt roof and not a rubbishy chipboard floor-these are difficult to clean.

If I were you, get a folder together of information about why you want hens so much, the benefits of the eglu and how much less maintenance it needs and why you think it's better than a wooden coop.

I eventually saved up enough money over about a year to buy my own eglu, (Second hand) and still have it and think it's brilliant!
