veggiemad
Hi. my hens have stopped laying and have been advised to worm them, although have also been told that 'cause they are ex batts i shouldnt need to worm them (only had them 10 days). Bought verm-x then told that was no good and need flubenvet (?). been to local vet and they've said i need to take a hen upto them before i can buy it. Just wondered if this was the norm, as i think any more carting around would be one stress too many. where else can i get it? thanks to all. Hen Watch
Flubenvet Intermediate 2.5% is what I bought online. But since then they have also brought out a 1% version - so make sure you are comparing like for like. I did this price comparison last month (do check it is still valid though please). Prices as at 03.08.09 http://www.petmeds.co.uk/p-3359-flubenvet-medicated-premixture.aspx £17.99 + £1.50 p+p = £19.49 http://www.petdispensary.co.uk/flubenvet-intermediate-keeper-pack-240gm-4382-0.html £16.99 only (free p+p for orders over £10) http://www.chemistdirect.co.uk/flubenvet-medicated-premixture_1_19154.html £21.18 + £2.95 p+p = £24.
Sarahsausage
Hello, I have ex-batts too and have wormed them as they free range. I've been told they can get worms from eating earthworms and slugs so best to do it if your free range too! I mix the dose in with some cat food as mine tend to chuck the layers mash everywhere so can't guarantee they get their dosage!
xScrunchee
Animal medicines is definitely the cheapest at the moment (£12.01) closely followed by Best Pet (£12.50). Both free P&P.
The Dogmother
It has to be stocked by a licensed seller, Countrywide stores hold this licence, otherwise from your vet or online.
..lay a little egg for me
If you have only had them 10 days, could they have stopped laying because of the stress of moving? How long after you got them did they stop? It could be that once the eggs that were "in the system" had been laid, the effect of the stress of moving became evident. Worming is a good idea anyway though.
BocBoc
We mix ours up with rice or mashed potato - the girls love it!!
The Dogmother
When I used it I used to make it up in a wet mash - makes sure it gets down their throats!
Raina
I'm going to sound really stupid but whats the difference between the 1% & 2.5%? and how much do you give them, I don't have a clue what the websites are saying lol
BocBoc
I'm going to sound really stupid but whats the difference between the 1% & 2.5%? I'd say about 1.5 %
xScrunchee
I'm going to sound really stupid but whats the difference between the 1% & 2.5%? and how much do you give them, I don't have a clue what the websites are saying lol They are just the same as eachother-one is just stronger so you would need to add less of the 2.5% to the feed if you see what I mean? Hope that helps
xScrunchee
When I used it I used to make it up in a wet mash - makes sure it gets down their throats! Did you not mix it into the 7 days feed? I used to use the grape method but now everyone is saying that it is better to mix it into the weeks food. That's going to mean no treats and hardly any free ranging as they'd have to stay in to eat the pellets. This is a pain simply because I am doing introductions and they all free range together for a few hours every day. I normally give them Panacur* but thought I'd go back to Flubenvet because some people say that Flubenvet is better. Pretty sure that the new chickens have worms and now the oldies are doing yellow foamy poo's too so I don't want to wait until after the intros *Not licensed for use on poultry in the UK
The Dogmother
I did , then divided it up into 7 days worth and then made it into a wet mash. That way, no powder gets left at the bottom of the feeder. I use Panacur* these days as it's a broader spectrum wormer. * Not licensed for use on poultry in the UK
xScrunchee
In that case I might do them with the *Panacur this time. If you're still using it I am going to assume that it is good I don't mind the egg withdrawal as it's only Jasmine laying now and that's not every day Will use the Flubenvet when they are all more settled together I think. In fact I may alternate each time I worm them-that way I'm covered!! One more thing Clare-do you give them the *Panacur then repeat after 7 days or 10 days? Someone even said that it should be done for 3 days on the trot so it'a all a bit confusing *Not licensed for use on poultry in the UK
The Dogmother
I was told by my vet to dose twice, a week apart. The dose being 1ml/kg of hen.
xScrunchee
Lovely-cheers. That's exactly how I normally do it but as usual, when you read too much-you start to wonder if you are doing it the right way. Well, all 6 have just had their first dose so I am about to order some more ready for the second dose next Thursday. Feel happy now that's done. Only takes 10 minutes to weigh them all and give it to them

veggiemad
great- thanks for all info. £12 online with P+P sounds like a bargain my vet wanted £21 plus an appt fee!!!! Great news on the egg front- got 2 today, 1 from the bully and the other from sage - who is the most friendly and relaxed of them - well she is now anyway. Am making a real effort to get them out everytime i'm in the house, even if only for half an hour, so they can have a break from each other , plus abit of corn, and it seems to be doing the trick! i just hope nutmeg starts laying again and i know that they're all happy!!
