Concerned about Muffin

Recommended Posts

Just got home to find Muffin one our our Frizzles

coming out of the Cube. Within minutes Rhubster or Light

Sussex cockerel was over ! He seems intent in being 'overly

friendly' with Muffin. She crouched down and he then pecked

on the head. He seems to do this too often and the top of her

Head is dry with a dry bit if blood!!!

Should we try and find a bumper bit? Rhubster

he 5 other girls but it seems Muffin is his favourite! Is this

normal? I feel really sorry for her & she seems to spend

most of the day in the nest box.

We are now at home for the next 5 days

so we'll be keeping a close watch.

Would welcome any advice :anxious:

Oh bless her. i asked claret a similar question and yes the cockerel does seem to have a 'favourtie' girl to pester. my little smokie is his usual object of affection, poor thing..

im not sure what you can do to dampen his desire though? put bromine in his tea

i have to say though, you cant blame him, muffin is such a pretty little chook!

does that sound weird? :anxious:

Is she the only one laying or about to start?

If so, she will defiantly be his favourite for the time being however when the rest of the girls start laying he will tread them as well, therefore giving muffin a rest!

A saddle might help if he is pulling feathers from her back...

Hi Tom, we think along with one of our other Frizzles Flump we think she is about to start laying.. the signs appear to say so anyway :anxious: Perhaps this does explain it! Thanks for the saddle link!!

Yes. Cockerels will only tread hens that are laying or about to start so his main attention will be on her for the time being. Maybe more girls are necessary?

Tom :D

Thanks Tom - that will explain it, we're still quite new to chooks so learning all the time...:anxious:

and we are talking about getting a few more chooks - think we have the perfect reason now

Sorry I missed this - Tom is quite right.

He's treading her because she's coming into lay.

Good call to take her out for a rest. As soon as the others reach maturity, he'll (hopefully) divide his attentions.

My grandfolks used ot have a cockerel who loved one girl more than most; she used to race around hiding from his attentions, luckily he didn't make her bare.
