The Dogmother
Happy hatching all! Just be aware that the quality and therefore hatch rate of eggs will be poor at this time of year. I will be hatching some pure breeds again next year, but will wait to get eggs until about April or May when the quality is back up again. Chook n Boo Mum
Oh dear, don't give up yet though, sometimes they come through really late don't they, just keep the humidity up, that's why I lost my two I think, because Buffie had moved away and they dehydrated , had I realised earlier, maybe I could have helped them, but in the scheme of things it's probably as well that things worked out the way they did Sha x
Redwing
Something is wrong with the inccy, I get the humidity up to 70 and within a couple of hours its back at 50 I filled it with damp kitchen roll before I left this morning in an attempt to keep up the humidity and have blocked two ventilation holes (still leaves plenty unblocked)
Lewis
Maybe cover a few more ventilation holes? and is the fan off? I'm sure its to do with it being nearly October, I hatched my quail in October last year and at this time of year the outside/room humidity is a lot lower as its colder outside, so you'll need to put in extra water surface area to balance it out. Its all about concentration/humidity gradients and if you up humidity inside the incy, the gradient is increased between the incy + room, so more humidity escapes and tries to balance out the 2. Sorry if you know all that
Redwing
Thanks Lewis, the fan doesnt switch off but the last two hatches have been really good I have just phoned home, the humidity is now 80% so I am sure the fluctuations over the last few days will have killed the remaining chicks Little Nugget is lonely so I have arranged to collect some day old pekins on the way home If the eggs do hatch it will be a bonus Hubby suggested we invest in a 'proper' incubator - he is slowly converting to chickenism
Chook n Boo Mum
Potentially sad news about the babies but fingers are still crossed here............. You'll have to post pics of Nugget and the Newbies then Sha x
