Clothes Sizes

Recommended Posts

A little rant here: I'm fed up of buying clothes that are too big. I've always been pretty small and have had the same measurements since I was about 14 (I'm now 50 something).

I used to be a size 10 when I was 14, and you got a good range of clothes to choose from. Then it slipped to a size 8 and there were fewer shops stocking a size 8, and an even smaller choice of clothes.

Then it slipped to a size 6. Now this is fine if you want to look like an anorectic teenager, since all size 6 clothes seem to be made for this age group, but not if you want to look elegant and appropriately dressed for your age. However at least they fit without needing a belt to hold them up and avoid looking like the teenage boys in a thread on this forum ;)

And now...I ordered a pair of size 6 trousers and they are TOO BIG!

I suppose this is a function of being at one of the extremes of size, but honestly I'm not underweight! If there was a good range of clothes available at the lower end of the size range in the 1970's, why not now? This probably goes for the upper end of the size ranges as well, but I can't speak from experience.

I find it really annoying when sizes don't mean what they say. I am about 6 foot tall and on the upper side of normal weight and, depending on which shop I go into, I am a size 12, 14 or 16!

I am pleased that I am not standing at the side of Docsquid or I would look like a complete giant!

Yes, if ever I buy stuff it depends on where it's from as to which size I buy - my Omlet t-shirt was a 16 and was alright but not a lot of room, anything from Next is a 14 and anything from Primark (boo, hiss) has to be an 18 (so I tend to shop in Next if ever I can, makes me feel better! )

docsquid, you have just made 7257 enemies! Just kidding!

I wish I had your problem! :D

Oh dear! I hoped I'd make friends here ;)

Seriously, it is a big problem trying to find anything to wear! Like I say, I'm not underweight or anything, just pretty short - the original "petite" size. Workwear is incredibly difficult (they don't apparently make it in kiddies' sizes) and as for chainsaw trousers, or a brush-cutter harness that doesn't end up off the shoulder....

Sigh!

I have problems as I am short and a non-standard shape. Everything is cut for a classic pear-shape but I look more like a pigeon! Since I lost my weight I have ended up with size 8 on the bottom and big ol' bangers on a size 10 top. Try buying a dress or coat. Bravissimo have done well out of me this year, but they dont do petites..

I know what you mean, and all sizes vary between shops too and styles as well. I usually have to buy trousers in a size 12, but now I seem to be back into size 10s again...It's a bit strange really.

Think this might also be to do with running up and down five flights of stairs 5 days a week too, now I'm at college!

I think it's the way the material is cut and the style...it's still a bit strange really.

I understand the cut affecting how an item hangs, but for any given size there should be a waist, hip and bust size that the item must fit...my waist could not change by 2 inches within 10 minutes (I didn't even take any cream cakes into the changing rooms with me  ).

I have very healthy and slim children. It is a nightmare getting trousers for them especially my nearly 16 year old son.It has taken a month to find school trousers that almost fit him. He is nearly 5 8 but has a small waist. Both children's trousers and men's are huge. Slimmer fitting trousers are too short

funnily enough we went there today but no joy there was not much of a selection (2 pairs that were too short), maybe next time I could try ordering them. They need to be flat fronted otherwise they look ridiculous. He says he feels like he is playing dress up in his dad's clothes! He is wearing his current ones half way down his bottom, not to be trendy but because it is the only way they are long enough!

Thanks for that tip. I have the same problem with my DS. He is 15, 5'9" (actually I think that he grew an extra inch in the night as he is almost my height today!) and is really skinny so all his school trousers have to have belts. Off to look at John Lewis....
