Does anyone have B12 lack of absorption?

Recommended Posts

My B12 is very low and I have had to have a series of injections every other day, then it will be 1 every 3 months. I am told I will feel a lot better after the course of injections - has anyone else had this and can reassure me of the experience.

My FIL was diagnosed with pernitious anaemia when he was about 35 and has had monthly injections of B12 ever since. He is now a fit healthy 74 year old who doesn't look his age. The modern way to maintain this is with 3 monthly injections, but he finds that this doesn'r work for him and has always fought for the monthly ones.

I have a lot of veggie Asian patients who have these injections for life. They usually feel better after a week or so although it varies - some say they feel better immediately others takes longer but some may be mind over matter. If you are veggie eat lots of green and red veg if not red meat and fish. you should feel better less tired and achey fairly soon

I have B12 Injection every three months and have had for the last 10 years

as I no longer have the part of Bowel that absorbs B12

As it gets to the end of the 3 months I feel like a wind up toy slowing down

within a day It is like having new batteries :)

My only complaint is that sometimes they sting enough that I dont know whether to laugh or cry.

No big deal :)

I've also met quite a few patients who have needed these. As has been said above, people say they feel so much better within a few days of the injection. As an occy health nurse I often get asked to do these for them whilst they are at work, more convenient than taking time off to go to see their practice nurse.

I used to have these injections as my level had dropped low and was discovered when having investigations for tummy problems.

I had them every few days for a couple of weeks and then gradually increased the time between each one until it was every three months. This went on for a couple of years but have stopped now. The doctor suggested I tried without them for a test period (he knows I hate being on any form of medication) and my level has stabilised within the normal range for the last 18 months.

I did find them uncomfortable when being done as they are quite meaty injections but also found it alot better in one arm than the other!

I have an 82 year old coeliac uncle who has multiple other more serious medical problems. He is unfortunately pretty tired most of the time, but he does perk up a bit when he's had the injections. He's only ever been offered them at 3 month intervals - I didn't know you could get them monthly so I'm going to investigate this. Thanks for the heads up.
