water butts

Recommended Posts

Was wondering what size I will need, only got a small garden but planning to get a 1m x 2m raised bed to start veggie growing next year, 100ltr I feel maybe a little small but would it be sufficient, also tend to grow any flowers/plants in containers or hanging baskets (trying to save them from the chickens) Any advice appreciated

I am surprised at how expensive they are :(

Our local council doesnt do special offers but at the local tip they do sell the blue barrels sometimes which are good and nice and big

We bought some cheap dustbins and some water butt taps as a cheap alternative, we just have not got round to getting them set up

Always worth having a water butt or two! Especially at the end of the garden to save lugging the watering can around & unless I was misinformed, if there is a drought and a hospepipe ban ( yes I know that doesn't look very likely) but you are allowed to use a hosepipe to fill a water butt

I put a 200 litre water butt down the side of my house so that I don't keep slopping water through the kitchen and down the hall to water the front garden & pots. I bought it in Wickes & it cost £30 ish including the stand, lid & diverter.

We got ours at a reasonable price (including delivery, which is good as they are rather large) from our water supplier - Severn Trent in our case. It might be worth checking if your supplier has a similar offer.

And get the biggest you can - they can run out quickly in a dry spell.

Thanks peeps Been doing a little research, it would seem council did do them but not at the moment, maybe its seasonal, local water authorities also sell them at a reduced rate, interesting that they can be filled with a hose during a ban, that could be useful as my garden is very small, so only the one butt for me, just have to go for the biggest one I can fit in the available space
