Ian 6
Four weeks ago I aquired two chics - 1 Gingernut Ranger (Stella), 1 Miss Pepperpot (Guinness)apparently about 18 weeks old. This morning I found Guiness had laid a small but perfectly formed egg, with straw attached! So I was delighted. But have a question - at what age do they normally start laying as I wasn't expecting eggs for a while yet.
docsquid
Well done Guinness! Ours were 18 weeks, we got them just under 3 weeks ago, no eggs yet. I'm sure it is very variable. They are doing all the right things, but not laying eggs.
chelsea
Congratulations! The average POL age is about 20-22 weeks but in some hybrid hens it could be a bit earlier. Pure breeds take a little longer to mature.
chickenNutter
Ooooh!!!! it's not fair!! Not Not NOT! Mine are now 30 weeks plus, not a flippin egg in sight! Tantrum Tantrum Tantrum!!! beckyfitz
Cool names I think my first were about 24 weeks, the next lot seemed a bit younger, it varies a lot I guess.
Lewis
The weather also effects is and number of hours of daylight they get - longer hours of light means they'll lay more often At this time of year you'd expect them to be a bit older until they start to lay, or maybe even not until spring. Ian 6
This morning we found a second small egg! (sorry ChickenNutter!) The straw had been kicked out and it was laying in the nesting hollow. The first one was fine inside.

Ian 6
They have now laid 5 eggs ! While the others were quite small, today's was a big one. Is this normal?
