frogprincess
Hello, Our three pretty chickens arrived yesterday, along with the Cube and accessories. I have been keeping quite a close eye on the water and have been worrying that they aren't drinking very much. I have shown them how to use the teats on the big Glug and at least two of them (I haven't seen the other one do it yet) seem to have figured out but the level isn't going down very much and when I manipulate the nipply things (!) myself, they rush over and drink all the drops off the ground and the bars of the run, as if they are desperate. I put a small bowl of water in with them after that, and have been fillling it from the glug every hour or so - it's very popular. What should I do? Am I over-reacting like a silly new mummy? Any advice much appreciated. Thanks, Lesley.
The Dogmother
Some hens just can't get the hang of the superglug. I opted not to have one when I ordered the cube, and use a gravity drinker instead.
Chook n Boo Mum
I have 3 super glugs and a standard glug and 4 cage cups of water available at all times in my WIR for 10 chooks as I know some of my girls don't particularly like using the nipples......to be honest they'd rather drink the drips off the cage and any revolting puddle they find I'd leave a bowl or some kind of container that they can't knock over in the run for them as well as the superglug, though I'm sure others will disagree. Be aware that the revolting little minxes will poo in anything below bottom height though One of my SGs is attached to the run so they can drink from the top as I can't actually raise it high enough for them to use the nipples....that's their favourite drinker of the lot Sha x
docsquid
Mine prefer to drink drops from the bars of the run and revolting puddles too! Actually they can all use the SuperGlug but I now have a regular Glug and that is just fine. When they are FR they like to drink from our pond (which has a shallow sloping edge so they can get to it without falling in!).
Egluntyne
Mine never got the hang of the superglug. Too dim. I use the upturned bucket type drinker.
Slim
I use a very large dog bowl, I have tried all sorts of drinkers this is the one they all use! that and the drain for the kitchin sink and any dirty puddle they find!
Barkisland
Mine wouldn't use the superglug either, so I sold it on the Omlet website and use the upturned bucket drinkers and normal glugs instead.
Tutti Frutti
This afternoon, I saw one of mine drinking out of the hole for the washing line
chick wiggle
Mine do drink from the super glug but they also have the upturned bucket drinker in the run too and do seem to prefer this.
Chucky Mama
Mine after a year still don't like the glug. I am always suprised at how much chickens drink. Whilst I keep water in the glug they drink from a small bucket and bowl.
JanTheDiver
Mine have never got used to the super glug so I just lowered it on the bars and they drink quite happily from the top of it.
docsquid
Mine all like muddy puddles and the pond. Water collected in drain covers is current favourite. Regarding the Glug/Super Glug thing, Blodwyn prefers the SuperGlug - so much so that she goes round drinking drips from under anything and everything, including the bottom of the regular Glug. So I can't really put the Super Glug down so they can drink from the top, as there then isn't room for Blodwyn to drink the drips! The other two prefer the regular Glug but they can all use both kinds types of Glug. As they are FR a lot of the time, I really don't worry about water - they can all use the pond any time they like and with the rainy weather there are plenty of drips for Blodwyn to drink! The Dogmother
The only thing with that is to make sure that the nipples on the underside aren't touching the grass or ground, otherwise you'll find that it has emptied!
Chicken Shirl
We have ceramic drinkers here, they keep the water cool, and they do use them but, the prefered option is plant pot saucers and the pond dribbles from the hose pipe are popular. Gelbel
My girls' top 5 favourite drinking vessels are: A funny little thing I brought that you screw a water bottle in and turn upside down so the water fills a recepticle with 6 little holes. They all drink from the same hole at the same time. The v-shape in bricks (from various bordering around the garden). The bird bath. From the washing line (the hole or the cover) Bunny water dispenser I included the run

frogprincess
Thanks for your advice, everyone. I bought an old style Glug and they seem much happier with that, though they still seem to prefer drops on the sides of the run!
