Jools
I must be a mean chicken keeper. Apart from their pellets and a small handful of corn on a chilly afternoon my girls do not get any treats. Me too. I work on the basis that it's important for them to eat their pellets to get a balanced diet and I don't want to ruin their appetite by letting them loose in the sweetie shop. My Nan would be proud of me!
Chicken Shirl
What! no greens Jools! Nothing at all! not even the odd grape or two! No mealworms! No lovely muesli with yogurt! docsquid
I love it when they eat treats from your hand - I just rattle the pot and call "chickens!" and they all come running from all parts of the garden. It is helpful to get them eating from your hand as then you can use that trick to get them into the run in the evening - hold your hand in through the door and they all go rushing in! No sprout tree in the run! You will have me crying Jools. Well they have grass so I guess that's the greens covered. And I may accidentally drop one or two of the robin's dried mealworms in the morning. I am a sinner with yogurt though because they do get a little of the out-of-date natural stuff every now and again (if you read one or two of the other forums, you'll know that some people consider it a heinous sin to give poultry any dairy at all). But they ain't getting my sprouts!!! Not that they'd eat them, I have tried before and they don't like them. I do have a dog that steals cauliflower and broccili though. Okay. For no treats, read rare, very rare treats. But they still come running every time them see me, especially if I have the corn tin in my hand. Slim
mashed potato mine love aswell! Just put out 5 bananas tis morning as we have not eaten them this week!
4Clucks-minusOne
Mine love dry oats. They will follow us anywhere for them. I have them in a plastic pot and only have to shake it to get the girls running. I use it to get them back in the run in the morning and during the day if they have wandered off. I also soak pellets and add whizzed up carrot and apple/pear peelings, plus anything else I have such as broccoli, cabbage, cooked potato skins. I add chicken spice to the mix too. I started doing this because when they are FR they don't go home for their pellets. They come running when their bowl comes out and I just keep topping it up with the mix all day. They also come running now when they hear the rattle of the teaspoon on the dish. sounds like a dinner gong Before bed they come for their treat of either spaghetti, rice, mashed pots, or boiled baby pots. They don't like corn any more, they just want oats!

teee
Hi Guys.... i give my girls warm mash in the mornings... but think they are getting bored of it !!! when you talk about oats dry and in a porridge .. do you mean plain oats from the supermaarket .. they do like mash potato etc...oh and i do give a handfull of corn at nite to, but at the moment think they could take it or leave it as well . just like to know they got something warm in there tummys when they go to bed.. Thanks ...Have a wonderful christmas and a happy new year to you all.. Thanks for all your brill advice.
Chicken Shirl
Just for a change why not try them with some Golden Millet, my chooks love it and it keeps them amused as they take ages to eat it off the ground, they also love Hemp seeds. I mix porridge oats with water, yogurt, baokashi and chicken feed for them. It's a winner as well. I know what you mean about them getting bored with their food though, it is a problem, they are sooooooooo fussy.

Whilst I would agree that too many 'treats' would be bad, I think that greens (and the vitamins in them) e.g. cabbage leaves, chickweed, dandelions, brussels tops, beetroot leaves, etc. are supposed to be good for them and help make their egg yolks lovely and yellow.. emchook
I think I must be another mean owner ! Apart from squishy grapes and bits of old broccoli that is all they get over and above the pellets. If I give them too many treats they never come back into the run when they are called ..and there are too many foxes to leave them out on their own ! I am also worried about attracting rats with too many leftovers lying around
Luvachicken
On a sunday i chuck all the peelings at the bottom of the steamer with our nice veggies on the layer above. Then when cooked i put it in a tub in the fridge and just warm them some up in the microwave each night. They love it and it doesn't take much effort and it nearly lasts all week.
