The Dogmother
Good for you CM, I hope that you make it. I'm no good at distance running, but was a sprinter at school for the county. Rosie isn't athletic, but is very strong, she's a brilliant swimmer though and loves it. She's up to level 7 on her coaching at the moment and working up all the levels. I just hope that the enthusiasm lasts as she gets older.
Busybird
Chucky Mama wrote "What, I wasn't running for school.." I wait for a profound end to the sentence but what came was " I was running for chocolate" I'm with that kid A fair few years ago I joined a gym for 15 months (15 for the price of 12) during which I came to regard my 3 times a week visits as some sort of penance - never again . I then tried taking up running with a friend - a month of this and my knees ached so much I could barely walk and ended up doing less exercise than ever. This year, with money a bit tight but a definite need to improve my fitness and lose a bit of weight, I decided to ask for the Wii My Fitness Coach game for my birthday (£8 as opposed to lots more for Wii Fit) along with a step and some hand weights. I try to do a work out to this each morning and then take a walk locally or, if I need to pick anything up at the shops, cycle the 4 miles to town rather than drive (also saving on fuel). Since September I have lost 15lb. I would like to lose another 25lb. I find it really hard to keep going when progress seems so slow but I WILL keep trying. Today I have done an hours workout but it is pouring with rain so not so sure that I will get much more done...
Chucky Mama
I'm no good at distance running, but was a sprinter at school for the county. Exactly the same as me. I was a 100 & 200metre county sprinter and highjumper (until I stopped growing). Long distance running for me is a real trial. People often don't understand that it is completely different. I have really struggled to get the bounce out of my step that you have when sprinting and have had to adopt a gain closely resembling a shuffle
Kirstine
Since September I have lost 15lb [snip] I find it really hard to keep going when progress seems so slow but I WILL keep trying. It may seem slow progress, but when put like that it's remarkable; well done you! I've been plodding along pretending to run since about April. I do find that if I keep it up and do 30-40 mins 3 times a week I lose weight, tone up and feel better without having to eat less. However, I can't run for more than about 2-3 mins at a time, so spend a lot of time walking and feeling stupid. Yesterday I made a breakthrough; I tried running really really slowly, and 5 minutes went past before I had to stop. Maybe I've just been over-pacing myself? Busybird
Thank you Kirstine. When I tried to take up running I was advised to start with a half hour run where I jogged along for 2mins then walked for 2mins then jogged for 2mins and so on. When this became easy I was to up the total run time to 45mins and then start expanding the run / walk periods to 3mins and so on. It was working really well until my knees gave out Again, I was advised that this was the fault of my shoes (a well worn 15 year old pair of cross trainers) but I didn't have the money for a new pair of running shoes so looked to do something else. If you can find a way of keeping going that works for you then I think that is half the battle
sparkysmum
Busybird, thats fantastic - to have lost 15lbs since September, but sorry the running didn;t work for you. Today I've managed a 45 min cycle, 15 mins on rowing machine and a short swim, feeling good..................for now
Rhapsody
Again, I was advised that this was the fault of my shoes (a well worn 15 year old pair of cross trainers) but I didn't have the money for a new pair of running shoes so looked to do something else. If you can find a way of keeping going that works for you then I think that is half the battle The Fitness Instructor inside me just went "AIIIIIEEEE!" Please please bear in mind to run you need proper running shoes, fitted at a runners shop and if you run more than twice a week they need to be replaced every 6 months. Write the date you start using them in the inside. Old trainers are the easiest way to damage knees and ankles or give you shin splints, as our friend BB found to her cost. *looks for 'spanking' Smilie* I was determined to stay out of this thread
Happy chickens!
I play a lot of tennis - but don't recommend it to keep fit, was much slimmer/more toned when I went to the gym.
The Dogmother
I can only endorse what Rhapsody has said - get proper, fitted trainers and always make sure that you have enough room at the toes.. unless you want to end up with 'joggers toenail'. You need proper support, and if you're road running, then you will need soles with impact absorbers.
docsquid
Running doesn't suit everyone, and can be very hard on your knees, even if you have good shoes. I'd recommend trying cycling (non-impact but still high intensity) or nordic walking (same intensity as jogging but without the impact). These have worked for me, as running is completely out due to knee injuries.
Seagazer
Well I didn't do any exercise yesterday apart from dancing all night at a charity ball. Boy do my knees hurt today (very, very high heels ). I must have used up some calories but probably made up for it with the wine

I went to a running shop for my trainers and they put me on a treadmill to check my gait and analysed my feet etc to check which were the best trainers for me. I was so impressed that I took all 3 children to get decent trainers for them. 2 have very flat feet and do a lot of sport. Since they have had their new trainers non have suffered from sore knees which they had previously.
The Dogmother
That's great news CM. We used to have a proper running shop here, which did the same, but it closed down. A lot of runners have problems with pronating, where their feet roll inwards; you can get trainers with a support in to stop that happening. Ain't Nobody Here
Our running shop makes you go out onto the pavement and run up and down to see how they feel . I wonder if anyone has ever run up but not down again .
sparkysmum
Is that Run and Become ANH. ? The staff are so kind it's a pleasure shopping there. Oh I managed about 3.5 miles today.

Treadmills are also good because if you can't run for whatever reason you can get intense exercise by putting up the gradient. I guess I'm just an outdoor person and would rather be outdoors in any weather than stuck indoors in a gym, but can see the merits when the weather is terrible, as the last few days have shown! The Dogmother
I agree, I'd rather be outdoors too, but only have an hour, so using the cross trainer in the gym means that I can also do other stuff while I'm there.

Lesley
I like the treadmill because it is level ground and no bumps or holes like our land - I could walk a lot more outside here but really don't want to add any injuries. My second stint in each gym session is using the gradients - it really strengthens my knee.

Busybird
I managed my 'in house' workout both yesterday and today but think I may have to cancel my planned walk with a friend this afternoon as the wind and rain here are not conducive to any outside activity
Clash City Rocker
I've been back in the gym for the last 10 days, I've signed up for the Annual Leukaemia Care Santathon (5 miles in Santa suits) next Sunday 6th December. I'm only using the treadmill in 40 minute sessions about 6km-6.5km and was wondering what songs people were listening too? My current personal favourites include:- Shane Macgowan - Church of the Holy Spook Primal Scream- Country Girl Dead Kennedys - Too Drunk to ........ Carter USM - Bloodsport for All Transplants Diamonds & Pearls http://www.raise4leukaemia.org.uk/events-for-charity/community-events/santathon
C&T
Well done for signing up to the run - and good luck for it! I like anything "happy" and cheesy... Things like Abba that I can hum (quietly!!) along to! Or Culture club, Kaiser Chiefs, Madness or even some Meatloaf, Ricky Martin or Robbie/Take That!! A bit of an odd mix really at the moment... But it helps me run! Altough might put a load of Christmas music on the ipod soon though
patsylabrador
Thanks for inspiration - I just dragged out Wii fitness coach and did some weight lifting. I feel so much better, I was starting to feel winter stodge coming on which always leads to spring panic. Now I'll be ahead of the game - maybe.
