Big Girls 18 Months On (lots of pics!)

Recommended Posts

They look fantastic. I'm wavering so much about rechargeables (that is what DH calls ex-batts). I've had such a rough time recently and I find I cry whenever I look at pictures of these poor girls and don't know if I'm strong enough to go through all the emotions of looking after them.

But after seeing your contented chooks, it makes me think I should be helping them.

You would make a super ex batt chicken mummy Docsquid. Look how well you have done already in only a few weeks. You were born for it.

Thank you everyone for all your lovely comments. I knew Omleteers would understand my need to share :D. I won't be telling the girls how gorgeous everyone thinks they look though, or I'll never fit all their egos in the cube

As I said, I really would recommend ex-batts to anyone (I love the idea of them being "rechargeables" :D !). The ability to adopt ex-batts was what finally swung me into chicken-keeping and I've never owned "normal" chickens, but they really are eager to experience chickenny things and very enthusiatic for their new lives of freedom. It may take them a couple of days or so to feel brave enough to venture out, but I have photos of my first six sunbathing the day after their release and one of Clover dustbathing in the run that day too. I found with the little girls, adopted in March, that they learned much quicker, because they could see what the big girls did and just followed on - much to the big girls' disgust.

Docsquid, please don't worry about being strong enough. Ex-batts are not difficult to look after and, as Space Chick said, they really do want to be happy chooks. To misquote the Beatles, all they need is love :D. As long as you can look at the little featherbares with compassion and not run away screaming because they're not initially pretty, you'll be a great ex-batt mum. My little monsters had me wrapped around their sp"Ooops, word censored!" little wingtips from the moment they were put in the car to come home and neither they nor I have looked back since :D - go for it!

Well, that's settled then. After Christmas I'll be registering with BHWT and try and recharge some chickens. Don't know what my pampered flock will make of it all.

Yey, more ex batts enjoying a happy retirement

You will love having ex batts, they are so fun, full of character and most of all, forgiving. It amazes me every day how my girls charge over to see me when I come out of the back door - after all they have had such a terrible experience of human 'care' before their rescue. It really warms my heart.

I hope my girls will have a lovely, long retirement like yours, dancing cloud.

Yippeeeee :clap::clap::clap: Better start saving for another cube.:lol: the girlies will love it.:clap::clap::clap:

I don't think another cube is on the cards - they'll have to live in the existing one after the intros. I was thinking of hiring an Eglu for the intros. So I can only have 2 or 3 but even that is better than none.
