Can you recommend a good chicken book?

Recommended Posts

With my birthday galloping closer once more, my parents have offered to get me some chicken books. While i realise that a book can't help me half as much as the advice from all you chicken 'eggsperts' here, it would be quite useful and would save me from logging on to the forum every half hour with yet another trauma!

Keeping Pet Chickens by Johannes Paul and William Windham (the Omlet chaps). This was my first book and I love it. Starting with Chickens a Beginner's Guide by Katie Thear - very informative, and The Complete Encyclopedia of Chickens by Esther Verhoef and Aad Rijs - lots and lots of lovely chicken pictures in there (bought fairly cheaply at a garden centre).:lol:

Keeping Pet Chickens by 2 of the omlet guys is a superb book, especially for beginners, and aimed at pet hen owners rather than livestock keepers. Can recommend that unreservedly. Very reasonably priced, so you might like to be treated to one of Francine Raymond's books as well. Her Big Book of Garden Hens is lovely. http://www.kitchen-garden-hens.co.uk/books.htm is the link for these, but you can get at least one of them through the omlet shop.

Hens in the garden, eggs in the kitchen is another good book that you can get from omlet shop.

I bought my husband 'Hen and the Art of Chicken Maintenance by Martin

Gurdon'. Its quite a nice easy read, no real big detail on how to keep chickens, but it is how I pursuaded him that it is a good idea!

Leigh - I can thoroughly recommend this book for the joys of keeping chickens. It's not some much a manual, but morre a light hearted comedy that we can all relate to with our own chooks antics. The writer is very funny, and has paid attention to small, comical details.

Hi Chookiehen,

When is your birthday :?::?::D:D

My birthday is this Saturday coming (the 3rd).

I gave Chookiehubbie a note of all the books recommended, and I am now banned from Amazon till after the weekend!

The boys get VERY giggly when I mention chicken books, so hopefully my bookshelf will be groaning under the weight of all the new books that'll be waiting for me onSaturday morning!

I know what you mean!! They ought to make longer days for chicken keepers! As well as lounging around watching chickens and reading the forum, we really need a little extra to do the housework!

We visited the Wyevale Garden Centre in Telford, Shropshire on Saturday. They had The Complete Encyclopedia of Chickens book reduced to £5.99. :D Other branches will probably be offering the same deal. :D

If that's the one with Dutch/Belgian sounding authors, then Phil bought me it, and it's great. Very informative.

He agve it to me as a present, then told me it was reduced - took the shine off it a bit!

a large parcel has arrived from Amazon this evening, and the boys have rushed it away into their room, giggling and whispering all the way! Duncan appeared 2 minutes later asking for sellotape, so I guess I will have to wait till Saturday to see which one I get!

Ahhh, aren't they great, make you feel loved.

Rosie (7) decided that she wanted to take me out for mother's day, but didn't want me to know; she spoke to her dad, who passed the buck firmly on to The Boy. Phil helped her book it (primed the restaurant first bless him) and they then whispered in huddle for a couple of weeks. She wanted to pay for all of it out of her pocket money, but The Boy subbed it heavily, Rosie went to the restaurant with her cash bag of money and plonked it on the table...

Makes you think that at least you're doing something right in the way you bring them up.

:D:D:D:D
