Lewis
Well ... I now have 2 ducks! My friends have surprised me with 2 white ducks for my birthday! They aren't very good at keeping secrets so I guessed and happened to have a spare hutch and run ready just in case, but its still strange. They're in the side passage at the moment, apparently they are 6 months old, but they still have their duckling feathers and one doesn't have a proper quack ... I was assured its a girl and the tail feathers don't look curly but it was all a bit of a rush so will have to have a proper look tomorrow. I don't know what breed they are, I know they aren't call ducks from the size, but I'll try and find out from the breeder tomorrow. It sounds a bit worse than it is, they all know what I'm like and I've looked after ducks at the farm before, but its not that same as having them yourself. My parentals did agree so it wasn't a full surprise for them I mentioned getting a new eglu for them but they may go in the wooden coop
ClaireG
Saw your FB status. Awww what lovely friends you've got Lewis. Glad the parentals don't mind. Now, what have you called them??

Lewis
Well I've always wanted a duck called Jemima and the other one might be called Geraldine, but not fully decided yet Apparently they were from Warwick way, which is a bit far to go, but they're good Will get some photos and put them on later today, they're a bit dirty though. Apparently they were kept free-ranging with guinea fowl, chickens and turkeys and don't need their wings clipping? I think I'll do it just in case to be on the safe side, and will do the usual red-mite powder and flubenvet them.

Lewis
So thats narrowed it down to 2 breeds I saw them and thought they were campbells, but I think thats because that's all I've ever looked after. I asked my friend and he said they are 'generic' ducks Their tail feathers look pretty flat/straight to me but the quack is a bit quieter - they were told it was younger. Any idea how old they are? Breeder said 6 months, but I'd say they were a bit younger

Lewis
Well I showed a couple of photos to a friend of mine and he said Aylesburys, because Campbells have 'rich orange' legs and bills. My friend said the breeder had aylesbury's and aylesbury crosses. Lewis thinks it may be a drake or it could be younger Flat tail feathers seem to say girls, but my head says different Not sure what to do, probably keep and see what it turns out to be. Also not sure wether to keep them separate from the chooks or not ... getting a new WIR for the chooks so could get the ducks a Go/eglu to go in there long-term. I think I'd rather have them integrated in a WIR rather than them stuck in the eglu run Any ideas? Been splashing around in the paddling pool all morning ... have some photos when I can find the cable.
Valkyrie
Ooh lovely ducky pics. When I used to work at the rescue centre there was one resident duck - and my shed had abandoned ducklings. When they got bigger they were allowed outside - any teeny puddle was soon made into a big muddy patch! Beaks in, flubble flubble.

miller30
Hi i would say they are cherry valleys which is a hybrid duck i had one called salt until she died in june
Lewis
Another breed to add to the possibilities! Will have to wait and see how big they grow - I've tried to record the questionable ones quack to see if its a drake or not Its more of a high pitched quack, whereas the videos I've seen of drakes don't make a quack, more of a deep raspy noise Not knowing exactly how old they are doesn't help either
